just curious as to what are the characteristics with driving a high stall tq converter. like going up hills, daily driving in town etc.

I concur with turbo2nr,
I've Been running a 3200 stall non-lockup 9" Art Carr for about 15 years. Other than what has already been stated, I'll add blowing off your tires at every opportunity unless you are running at least MT drag radials or equivilent. Ask yourself Why do I need one? Turbo needs it? Good deal? prep for future upgrades?.....or, the ability to blow off the tires at will? If you fit this criteria, then go for it.
Best regards,
Larry

I've had the 3500 stall in my car for 2-3 years now. I really can't tell a difference from the stock d5 in normal driving conditions other than backing out of a parking space it takes a little more throttle. That and the annoying locking and unlocking of the d5 at 45-50 mph.

I have a 3000 Vig. lockup and a 3200 protorque lockup, two cars.

Both work fine on the street but I personally wouldn't go any higher than 3200.

Lockup is a must for me on the street. :)

Everyone should have a transmission cooler installed anyway even with a D5.

Both cars get 17/18 mpg avg. which was about the same as with the D5's in there.

50 mph lockup in one car programmable with the translator and extender extreme chip, not sure about the TT chip car, prolly around 50mph also, guess I should go drive it and find out.

Just my .02.

It's about the combo as much as it is about the converter, IMO.
I have the 10" Yank Super Stock, and you'd never know it was different from stock at small throttle openings. I also went with the heavy duty TCC. With a 206/206 cam, 60 PPH injectors, Cotton F/M, TA62, it's perfect for my setup.

Try to drive a few different setups to see what really makes you happy. Especially, if you're worried about street manners.

The most common praise we hear from out 9X11 customers is how the converter has such great street manners and yet when you step on the brake and spool it up, it's all there.

the locking and unlocking at 45-50mph is very annoying, but it is well worth it. i have a 3100 stall and love it!
and i started this thread just to make sure my tranny was acting like everyone elses.

its not so much the advertised stall on the converter, but how its built. i had an orange stripe (3,000) and it was a pain in the ass. i absoultely hated it.it would stall at 3,000 regardless of how it was driven. it would jerk you pretty bad if you were just easly accelerating, it was just a bad deal.

then i've driven my dads car with a 3,400 stall not sure who made it but it is a good high quality unit. its great! it drives about the same as stock when your driving it like a sane person but when you start trying to make some power it stalls at the higher rpm, its like it knows what you want.

the best advise out there is to not go cheap on the converter, i wish i would have listened.

and with a lockup your fuel mielage will not be effected on the highway, and really your not going to see anything significant in town, if your able to drive it easy. thats the hard part.

I had a #16390 Art Carr non lock converter in mine up till about a month ago. It took alot of rpms to get the car moving, but the car was an absolute beast. Torque multiplication was insane. But I drive 35 miles each way to work every day and I was getting 16mpg. RPM's were about 3000-3200 when climbing hills at 70-75, which was just too high. Not only that, but it was heating the tranny up so bad that it was bringing my coolant temps up to 220 on the freeway. I threw a D-5 in there and now the car takes like a pound of boost just to get moving from a stoplight. While the car is still pretty quick at WOT when under boost, spoolup takes alot longer and its alot less fun. What REALLY sucks is that my mileage didnt go up AT ALL. It takes so much more power to get this stock converter moving that any benefits from lower rpms are negated. If I were you, I would get a good quality high stall converter with a good lockup setup. You get the best of both worlds. Bad thing is, good converters dont come cheap.

well i drove my friends pats 3200l/u a little while ago and i got out the car lookin like this  so you know exactly what i will be doing next. minimum 3200, i think i could even live with a 3400. the converter was super tight to me, maybe because im used to driving low to high stall (2400-3200) cars that weigh a 1000lbs more. a 3200 stall in a gn was a joke to me, just doesnt seem like a high stall.
