10W30 valvoline breaks down pretty bad: 50psi cold idle, 15psi hot idle. Should I go with a 20W50(for summer only) or somthing in between? What psi do you guys get at hot idle? I have no oil cooler right now...fyi.

That's normal oil pressure and not the oil breaking down.

I use a mix of 10/40 and 20/50, mostly 10/40 but run the car 3 seasons here in CT. Valvoline usually.

Other car uses synthetic 10/30 with the BB turbo as recommended by Innovative. That car runs all 4 seasons.

Summer use only there's no reason you can't go a bit thicker if you wanted to with the oil.

15psi. hot isn't bad at all with no cooler.

I use the factory coolers in both cars. :)

I use 10W30, and my car has about 180,000 miles on the engine and the original turbo. The engine was built by Buick with tight clearances, and doesn't need heavy oil. If you have an engine built with looser clearances, then you might want to run heavier oil, but with the stock clearances, not needed.

hey smokin6 is 20/50 thick or thin ? im wondering wats the best to run on ym car im in socal myself and i have just under 10,000 miles on it wats the best way to go wit the numbers anyone thanx again

Im in socal and I just run Royal purple 10W30 and my cars driven daily.

20/50 is mighty thick, you don't want to run it if your anywhere with temps that drop below about 40! It will sure slow down any leaks (rear main) that, with the boost these cars put out, start leaking sooner or later no matter what seal you put in.

What Kind Of Oil

I Have Used 1040 Castrol Synthetic Oil With A New Filter Every Oil Change(approx.every 3,000 Miles)you Can Switch To Synthetic If You Have Less Then 50,000 Miles On The Engine.

the rumor is, if you have been running dino oil and switch to synth.... leaks!
don't know as far as the other way around.

Thanks for all your info. I had purchased some Kendall 20W50 to replace the Valvoline 10W30 which I thought was breaking down when it got hot. I think I might try a 10W40 and see how that does. I think the 20W50 would be too big of a difference. It's so damn hot out in northern IL!!!

Do you guys ever mix weights (ie 20w50 runs too high of a pressure, but 10w40 runs a bit low) or mix synthetic with regular dino for a bit more protection (allegedly) than straight dino?

I've got some full synth 20w50 that I bought when I thought my pressure was on the low side, but it's actually pretty good. So, I'd like to mix the synth with 10w40 or 10w30.
