I guess you could run them on an '87.

I have a set of these sitting in my basement with very low N/A miles on them. I took them from an 82 or 83 olds 3.8. Look at the water jacket on the sides, the 45 heads have a bridge in the middle to add support. I read where some people run these heads and have the machine shop fill in a bridge before doing any other work to them. Not sure of flow numbers???

why would ya bother ??? get the right one's.. they are cheap enuff out there

well it all started when i was on here, looked up at Ebay banner and seen heads so i clicked on link, the guy had turbo advertised the i scrolled down and seen in discription that THESE were the heads used upto 87

I seen the non bridged water ports, seen the cast number then cross ref'd it and seen for N/A 80 to 83

So of course I had to ask the guy a Q and asked him if them were turbo heads for my 87? muhahaha

Anyway i get reply and he says oh yeah best ones ever made etc etc

so I chewed on it for awhile then responded by telling him he was full of crap then he wrote back telling me he has all the books and hes done thousands..yes thousands of these heads and i wouldnt know an 87 head from a head of lettuce.

Well I may be a newcomer to the Buick game but i for sure know what a head of lettuce looks like

Was just bored and having fun with the ebay peddlers

The 6293 castings are the same casting as the StageI heads. The StageI heads have the bridged water ports, and do not have the EGR passages drilled. He is correct that the 6293 castings are the best port configuration there is. They are identical to the 8445 castings. The only difference that I can find is the bridged water ports. Some of the 6293 castings came with the bridged water ports and drilled EGR holes. So he is "kinda" right. Not lettuce, but maybe cabbage.;) I really don't think that the bridged water port makes a big difference anyway. You could weld them up, but would it make a differnce? Probably not. 8445 castings are the way to go, anyway, and they are very plentiful.

Thanks Ken,

When i seen it listed, it said made for up to 87 and i just asked him simple question wondering, then i checked the books and gntype.org and seen 3.8 and 4.1 early castings, I seen the egr set up on the early castings are different, didnt know how much or if everything was bolt on, but anyway im not lookin.

Still getting the chevy to buick transition sorted out but im pickin it up.

and i like cabbage more then lettuce anyway

Cabbage is pretty "Gassy" though isn't it?:p

Ya, I understand the "new avenue" thing, for sure. I grew up racing Fords. I HATED GM cars. Then I really liked the underdog deal with the turbo V6. After playing with these things for 20 years, I've picked up a thing or two. Hopefully the mistakes that the rest of us have made will benifit you. Keep the crank in the block where it belongs.;) There are alot of folks on here willing to help out.:)

Are these the Bruce Springsteen fuelie heads?

That seller wasn't from NJ by chance? Those Jersey guys really know a lot about head......s.

Okay? What's the casting number for a SBC Turbo head? Bow Tie head?

I'll have to tell you my story of how I got my hands on the very, very first set of BowTie castings. Lets just say I have a copy of a check from Reher-Morrison and I used to know Lee Shepard personally. And thats no BS.

And with your Story.. I met you at the CF gathering and was quite impressed with all the people youve met so Id believe it.

I kinda ate crow on this thread but when the guy answered my first question he stated that they put them heads on the 87 and thats what got me going. i tried to find the ebay reply but i deleted it.

I just recently had, in my own hands, a set of the the Smokey Yunick "Mystery" heads. They were real interesting, but really, really thin. Might make OK power if light weight was the goal over longevity. They are esentially the prototype BBC head. I had been reading about them for years and years, and I stopped by a local head porter, and he was working his magic on them. They were purchased at the Yunick estate sale. Kinda cool to hold a piece of history in my hands.

I'm a 30 minute drive from the old 'Best Damn Garage In Town". I bought a surface grinder and cabinet for $20. Thought it was busted. Bought some new belts and played around with it and what do you know. It works. All but the little sink in the center. I think retail on a new one is $4K! Too bad the belts are only 4" wide. I'd like to use it to make the turbo mounting flanges flat and smooth. When I use it I often wonder what Smokey was working on when he used it. Maybe some magic would rub off? Maybe my garage is possessed by Smokeys ghost? I doubt it. More like a curse. I cant get anything done.Funny thing though. I have this weird urge to cheat.

The old building is still standing but barely. They are building condos on the lot and it's just a matter of time before they tear it down. To bad Daytona couldn't preserve it as a historical building or move it down the street for the Racers Hall of Fame. The last time I was at Don Garlits Musuem he had a lot of Smokeys stuff there on display. Including a Mystery Motor or two.
