I'm making a quick FYI post on all the boards I spend a little time on to give a heads up to everyone on a new twist (at least it was for me) on the scams
Just about an hour ago I had an interesting email about a laptop I was selling, was simple and to the point: do you still have it, I'm interested....
So I wrote back that I did and a few places that I would meet someone with it, all busy and secure but with atm access onsite so nobody needed to carry $400 around with them either.
Response back was interesting in that this person then claims to be trying to buy it as a present for someone, are from out of state (BIG RED FLAG!!!) and they can paypal me for it (no mention yet of shipping or picking it up)
I replied US Postal Money Order ONLY, which should work out good because I can cash it at the counter and send the laptop at the same time.
They replied they could only do paypal and nothing else, and in this email the grammar and typing wasnt as good as the others.. I said no thanks and walked away.
Paypal is not 100% secure and if you read through their chargeback policies, etc, they are a ripe haven for scammers. Anyone who has a stolen identity and card numbers obviously has the billing address for the account too... Looks like now they are trying to set up paypal accounts with the info, rack up charges through paypal, get the stuff, and disappear for the real owner to dispute the charges after the fact... You then are liable to paypal for the charge back per the user agreement and out your property.
Just thought I'd toss it out there for anyone not yet aware and to be careful..... It cant be long until they start trying to do this for ebay and other auction sites as well so use caution! That said, Happy Holidays and hopefully I'm the only one that there's a try to pull this on.....
