My buddy has a DOHC B20 honda motor (1986 from Japan) in his 1986 Accord. It has a ported head and aftermarket cams that came in a package from GUDE Performance. It also has MSD 6AL box and matching Blaster 2 coil.

The problems :

1. Ever since he bought the car it has been running extremely rich from idle to WOT and the exhaust smells like raw fuel.

2. Once the car warms up and stays around 210-220 the car starts to stumble and cut at just about any speed. Once this happens the tachometers (1 stock and 1 running straight out of the MSD box) usually start jumping erratically throughout the whole range of the tachometer. Today after running the car for @ 10 minute straight the problem occured, we pulled over, and noticed that the Blaster 2 coil was very hot to the touch. The coil is mounted on the fenderwell, parallel to the ground. (is this mounting OK?)

We have been trying to diagnose the problems for a year or so now, with no luck yet and are looking for any suggestions you guys might have. I know this is a turbo buick board but the Honda guys havent been much help yet so I told my buddy Id ask you guys.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

If this a carburated engine, that would be my very first thought. Honda had some major issues in the mid 80's with their carburators and worked them out mostly by going to injection on their engines. If you have gone that route already I would next look to fuel management system. Also look for a possible clogged return fuel line issue. Other than that, you are past my limited knowledge. Mark

Thanks for the reply, it was actually FI from the factory in 86 but its obvious when looking at these cars/motors that they had some issues with a lot of things. And we just tried the fuel return line last night and it seemed to flow fine, making us think that the FPR was working correctly, but my buddy has an adjustable on the way so we can back the fuel pressure down if need be.

Thanks, keep em coming

peace

I used to be a Honda tech. Im not to familar with the old ones due to the fact that they all rotted away here in Ohio. If I was going to start somewhere I would check out the ignitor in the distrubutor. Ive put enough of them in older fuel injected Hondas. Id also check the fuel pressure to make sure its not too high. Also, aftermarket crap like dist. caps, rotors, and so on work like sh*t in them. Always use factory parts!!! I couldnt tell you how many times Ive had odd crap going on with them and it was all due to garbage aftermarket parts.

Thanks for the reply. We found a different coil and tried that tonight. I dont think it solved the problem, so a distributor is next. I'll keep you updated (because Im sure you're all so eager ;) )

Thanks
