Just bought my first gn about a month ago. Bought it form original owner and car runs and drives perfect, interiror is mint, it sjust that hes had it outside for the past 16 years OUCH!!! the weatherstripping is horrible(have mos tof it to replace) and the paint is pathetic. There is harldy any paint left in the hood and trunk it is so faded. the good news is that there is not a spec of rust ont he body anywhere! however, i have been visiting the local paint shops and the best deal ive found to strip the car of its old paint and reapint it is $3000!!!! i really cannot afford this and dont need a show paint job, as i drive the car daily almost 300 miles a week. So i was wondering, has anybody used a sealer and had the car painte dover the old paint? is this pbad becuase of the black paint. will this come out decent? jsut looking for input on what to do cause i have a great running car, it jsut look pathetic.

DON'T try to paint over the bad paint!

Drive it like it is, no matter how painful it may be, and save your dough for a proper job. In the end , you'll be glad you did.

Listen to Greg. My car had horrible paint and it needed to be taken to metal and start from there. $6700 later it looks AWESOME!!

Obviously around Philly are those cheapy paint job places. If the paint on your car is not cracked or doesn't need to be stripped, then you'd be a candidate for a scuff and shoot. Go around and find a place where you can see the finished product so you can critique their work. If they put out nice shiny jobs, go for it. I don't know how much they charge today, but I'm sure you can get it done for under $500. Unlike metallics, black paint won't "go away". If you take care of it, it'll look great for years.

Enjoy the car. You'll be surprised at how the 10dollars a week add up.

My Limited is going in August 1. It took a ahile but I got what I wanted.

Including parts my bodyman saw. Take it easy.

You got great advice. You wouldn't rush a motor. My next project. HTH'ed

Thats what i said at first, and i do love the car and everything about it. its just that it doesnt seem to get the repsect that other GNs in my area get cause its ugly!!! anyways, thanks for the advice

Shawn,
The're jealous.
In 1992 I bought a GN that looked gray. On top of that it was pinstriped, everywhere. But the ran well and the guy didn't take care of the body.
My Stepfather took it,somehow made the car look shiney.
The striping was tape. So it took some work but it was passible.
Later had the car done. Was stolen in97' and I still wish I had it.
Point is Patience. Don't listen. I looked at GN's that where said to be clean. Dogs. Take your time.................If I can help let me know..........Rob

The car does run very well and has been mechanically maintaned very well also. Do you know of anything that may help the paint? I have tried all the stufffrom the stores and buffing, but it has not gotten much better.

Try This

Take a small section near the bottom of car. Never use a wheel.

With your hands a directions. Try and clean a small spot.

If you could shoot me a picture. Would help greatly.

I just did my buddies Rosewood Limited. I could see it had paint. Just had oxidized.
Came out nice enough to hold off paint for a while.

Let me know.........HTH'ed Shawn. Rob

1500 grit sandpaper and a bucket if water. Then take some polishing compound and a polishing wheel to it.

These guys know. One thing remains constant for all cars(even imports.) Cheap paint ain't good and good paint ain't cheap. Hold out, save up and start your research now on finding a quality bodyshop. Find cars with above average paint and ask their owners where it happened. Visit car shows. Soon you'll have a short list. Good luck.

PS. I don't know if I'd go sanding on original paint even if it was brand new it was likely too thin to sand and buff successfully. Unless it's so bad you've got nothing to lose.
