im new to turbo buicks but was wondering if it is a hard or easy swap to put a 87 ic motor into a 84,85 hot air car .there are some pretty cheap 84,85 gn's out there and was wondering if it would be worth it to swap or just wait for an 87 ,any info would help ,thanks dave

What are your goals as in "How fast do you want to go"?

I did it w/o a 86-87 parts car. Don't do it if you don't have a parts car. It will nickel and dime you to death! There are MANY pieces that will not work from your hot air car! Find a rusted out car or one that has been rolled or rear-ended.

its not how fast i want to go its going to be a summer car something to have fun with but from what others say the ic motors are better

i have a chance to buy a complete running engine and trans from 87 will everything plug in ?

Get the engine wiring harness, throttle cable, cruise control cable, heater core, electric cooling fan and relays, etc.
Conrad

like I said, there are a LOT of parts that don't switch over.

i put an 86 ttype motor and trans in my 85 and have never been happier with the car. i too bought the car with just the intention of having a fun good looking car but soon found that i would never be happy with how fast my car was and i just went cool and never looked back!

My bad. Sorry for asking.

Conrad is correct: without a complete car from which to swap parts you are in for a time. It's not difficult, just very labor intensive. For example the fuel lines would also had to be swapped or otherwise reconfigured, the a/c plumbing is different, and more that I can't remember right now.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT!!!!!!!!!!! Not only does it run better and is much faster, but its easier to work on and get parts for. Tried to make my 84 gn fast. Boy that cost me alot to go just a little faster. Switched over with stock stuff and was much faster from the get go. Now I have gone extreme, but will never, ever go back. :D

84/87 Conversion

There are a few of us on the board that have done the switch.
I personally did a 84 GN to a 87 setup.
The Lear interior alone done right $$$$ go 85 or T Type
If you plan to do it be prepared to spend a lot more than you think.
Then most likely the moter you put in will be stock or need a rebuild and now you want to go fast more money!
Yes it's easier to get parts for the 86/87
If you decide you want to go this route there are many here that can help

I have done several, when you get to it and have questions just give me a buzz (630) 965-1987.
