How long should it take to change injectors on an 84

My car has been in a GM shop for a while now (over two weeks) where they have been trying to diagnose a rough idle problem. They say it is injectors. Apparently they started to change them yesterday PM (over a full day) and no word yet that the car is ready. Just how long should it take to change the injectors on my 84 GN?

less than 2 hours....with that being said, if you have your car at a busy shop (like ours is) techs work on multiple cars per day. they may have had to order the injectors too......give them a day or 2 and they should have it going in no time.......

when you say "GM shop" are you talking about a dealer?
if so, they are probably still trying to figure out how to hook their OBD2 scanner to it so it can tell them what's wrong with it..

I have a friend that was a tech at a large dealer in the mid '80s. He told me when one of these came in, the other techs would open the hood, close the hood and give the job to him. Everyone in the shop hated working on them. Knowing what I know about cars in general and how GM dealers work, I don't think I would take anything to them. At least not the few near me. (I am sure there are great dealer service departments and don't mean to put them all down).

Thank you all, I think. Yes it is at a dealer. The shop foreman is a car guy (built his own cool rat rod) and supposedly keeps a watchful eye on everything. That having been said they identified new injectors and the fuel pressure regulator as the culprits causing my extremely rough idle. In the process they replaced a number of cracked vacuum lines. After all that ($567 in parts and $980 labour) they said my problem was almost fixed and they needed to source a IAC motor. They released the car to me for the father's day car show in town. Drove it home (45 kilometres - yes i am in Canada) and ses light set within 4 kilometres and stayed on for 4 kms. Set again 8kms later and stayed on for 2. Stayed off for the next 27kms. Car idles much better but still not good and now WOT is dead. No power at all and car seems to be running on four cylinders. Car is going back in as soon as they source the IAC and I hope I can make it to the show and back tomorrow.

Anybody know if GM has an ombudsman or complaint department that actually listens to their customers??

you might get out your dmm and check the voltage on your tps, that may help your WOT issue, the iac shouldnt be causing the issues you are describing here, as its mostly for cold idle performance, test your maf to see if its working properly, try unplugging it at idle and see if the rough idle clears up or tap on it(while plugged in) to see if it idles differently a bad maf can cause all kinds of drive ability issues. also check your fuel pressure. and if you have access to a scan tool check your O2 sensor.

Yup the tps adjustment is easy to do - in theory - in practice it's a "B" as it is just plain tough sliding it to one side or the other by the micro inch required. I have done it and can do it again, however; I really want the dealer to do what i have paid them for and not touch it myself until I really have to. I will come back to the forum and benefit from all suggestions at that time.

The rough idel is not due to the injectors like the shop assumed. He's also running on 4 cylinders... I'm assuming there is no oil pressure...I could be wrong but I went through the same process before I was left with the only option for a rebuild.

if he had no oil pressure he would have way worse problems than rough idle, like rods knocking, lifters rattling badly, turbo froze up from lack of oil and if there is no oil pressure the oil sender kills the fuel pump so the car wouldnt run.

Nope.. oil sender runs the idiot lite and allows fuel pump to run, should the relay fail.

It'll still run, you would just hear knocking most likely and that's true there would be more problems than just a rough idle but In this case those injectors were not the cause of the rough idle.

here's my 2 cents. lol never take your car to a mechanic. The money you gave them to solve your problem should've been spent on the tools you would of needed to do the job yourself. With all of us on here to help we would've got u going in no time. I can honestly say I would've started this job by finding out the compression on the engine by doing a leakdown test to see where your motor stands.

Nope.. oil sender runs the idiot lite and allows fuel pump to run, should the relay fail.

THE oil pressure switch does TWO different things, First it supplies the fuel pump with current after the time delay fuel pump relay cuts off, It is a saftey feature so you can not run the engine with low or no OIL PRESSURE,

THE second circuit Lights the Red oil lamp on the dash,

It should not run with the oil pressure switch disconnected.
