How much to cut off wastegate rod.

I have a stock style adjustable wategate, and am maxed out on my boost level. I need to cut off a little of the rod, so I can go a little higher on the boost. I was maxed out at 20psi,(which was fine) but after adding a THDP, my max boost fell off to 18psi. I need to go higher.
So how much of the rod do I chop off?;)

Go easy! Too much and you'll be really upset! I was able to gain 3-4 lbs. by trimming mine 1/4" with a cut-off disk. Hint: leave the nut on the rod when you cut. Afterwards unscrew the nut to rethread the rod perfectly.

If you choose to pull the Wastegate off of the turbo to do the cutting watch how much torque you put on the compressor housing bolts when re-installing. The bolts are kinda short, and the soft alum. compressor housing strips easily if you put too much into them.


(The 2 bolts to take the Wastegate off are 13MM)
 
If your pipe coupler is long enough, then you shouldn't be afraid to cut "too much" off. My coupler is over an inch, and that gives a range of like 15 psi or so (I would imagine). You could just spread the wastegate arms apart if you boost was "too high". Grrr, I'm looking for the picture on gnttype that would help me explain this better, but it's not coming up for some reason.
I assume you're maxed out because the two halves of the wastegate rod are touching inside of the pipe coupler?

Good advice Weazel! Mine is the aftermarket style with the one-piece clevis on the end of the rod. Use what works for yours Ross!

If the threads are 1/4-20 like most adjustable wastegate actuators, that means there are 20 threads per inch, so each thread is .050" long. So one full rotation changes the length by .050". Since one full rotation is also approximately equal to 1 psi of boost, .050" = about 1 psi.

Using a ruler, you can determine how much you need to cut off.
