How to overcome the oil filler tube leak?

Ok I had this problem before when I had the stock oil filler tube with the stock valve covers. A replacement filler tube gasket from didn't help it.

So I order up a filler tube/gasket/breather from Kirbans. That worked. For about a month. Now we're back to square one again. I have that issue of oil that seeps out from the filler tube and all over the driver side valve cover. Also the filler tube is now rather loose.

I imagine I could bend the tabs for the tube and maybe make it snug again but is there perhaps another way of stopping oil from leaking from the filler tube?

A one piece filler tube/valve cover might stop it...does such a thing exist?

I take it you have stock valve covers? I want to say if you had aftermarket V/C you can get a better seal since it's not a tab kind. Try using a thicker gourment or a little gasket maker under the lip of the gourment(where it touches the V/C)

I had a billet tube on my stock VC's and tight fitment was great. I just put a rubber plug on the tube instead of a breather. It won't loose up on you.

If you want to go with the stock filler tube this gasket works well Old Buick Parts - CARS. Inc.

This gasket is thick and allows the filler tube to tighten nice and snug. Worked for me.

Yes I unfortunately have stock valve covers.

I've actually tried the RTV thing before....didn't work.

Mikestertwo will that cap you speak of work on stock valve covers? What did the cap come off of?

davidf, it's not the actual breather that comes loose, it's the tube where it secures into the valve cover.

Here's a pic of the cap. I'm not sure what year FWD it came off of. I know it was mid 80's just not sure of the exact year. I have seen them in the "Help" section at auto parts stores.

Used the vent on the right valve cover.

Mike is right...I did this, too. Leaks stopped like he said. The cap is flat, says use 5w-30 oil on it, but use the oil of your choice.

BTW I went into O Reillys and checked their help aisle with no dice. The clerk wasn't much help either. (not surprised)

Have you ever taken off your cover and looked at it? I have seen some nasty castings on these cars. Might just need a different cover. I do know that the Metco angled breather tube seals real good. Might try it.

I had that problem a couple years ago stock filler 86 gn I used an o ring 1/8 " thick about 1 " dia. sealed good no leaks since, make sure its gas/ oil resistant.

Sorry, it was so long ago that I can't remember the car I got it off of. It looks exactly like Mikester's picture. Exactly. You'll be best off just going to the boneyard and looking at all the '88 and up GM cars, sooner or later you'll find it. That's what I did...I wasn't really looking for one, but I just noticed it on a GM valve cover and got it. It worked great. Twist on, nice and tight. I do miss my filler tube, though. I love the stock look sometime.
