How to pull a TR engine in new GMHigh tech...

Is it just me or did they not make mention of actually removing the bolts HOLDING THE ENGINE IN THE CAR!! And did anyone have to remove their fan to pull theirs, cuz I didn't. And where they put their chain is going to tear up the valve covers pretty good. Rookies.....

I haven't seen the article, and I don't tear up anything where I put the chains. But... there must be a better way to attach the chain from what I'm doing to make it easier.

Any photos of the easiest way to do it? I thought I saw a photo of a plate bolted to the top of the intake where the plenum would be?? That seems like it would be hard on those threads in the aluminum though!?

According to the article, they attached the chain to the drivers side rear stud for the exhaust manifold.

Much better way

Here is the best way I have found to pull the motor. I have been doing this way for over 10 years and no scratching anything. We sell the straps at HR too..

Yes it goes under the intake inside the fuel rails has good balance as you can see. I take it out with everything intact including the fuel lines turbo everything.. Much easier to do all the assembly on the engine stand..

Tom, if I can find time I can help pull your engine. Its pretty easy.

I like the strap too, but never seem to have it when I need it. I use chains and never hurt anything, but I use common sense and place them where they don't rub. Usually in the front/back of the head or intake bolts, depending on the level of completion of the motor.

Also they should make mention that every engine picker I've ever seen doesn't have enough throw to pick the engine straight up. My custom one does, but I've used others and while they do work, you gotta be careful when it snaps loose of the mounts and goes forward.

You're right about the average cherry picker not being able to reach...at least from the front...that's why I did my last few pulls from the side....works great...

Yeah, I tried that but I would have to pull the wheel off, and my one jack was being used to hold the tranny up. The great thing about yanking these motors is they are very light, so they are easy to manhandle, and theres so much room in front its not going to hit anything.

there are SEVERAL companys out there that make a plate that bolts to the aluminum intake, I mean for big blocks. I see what you are saying, but this practice is done all the time. but for another note I'm going to my local sling manufacturer on monday & having one like Daves made up! that's slick!
