I just installed an Art Carr 200-4R (Texas Art Carr) this year in my '85 Monte Carlo SS (Vortec 350) and am unhappy with the WOT shift points. First gear is great, shifts at 5500, but the 2-3 and 3-4 shift at 4800. I have to shift manually to redline the engine. I don't mind this when I'm racing but it's a pain when you have to do this when passing on the freeway.

Can I just install a different governor? My stock Monte SS 200-4R never had this issue. How difficult is the job? Do I have to drop the valve body? I do most of the work on my car myself, but am a little intimidated on messing with a brand new trans. It runs soo well, I don't want to change that, just would like it to hold the gears like it used to.

Thanks,
Jason

If you lighten up the governor weights, you will move the 1-2 shift point above 5500 rpm. Is that what you want?

I am very happy with my 1-2 shift. I would like the 2-3 and 3-4 to match it. I was thinking about swapping in the Monte Carlo SS governor from my old trans instead of modifying the current one.

Just a thought...why would a governor allow the engine to rev to 5500 in first gear but not second gear? I have never hooked up a gauge to the trans to read the pressure, but maybe the trans is not putting out enough pressure for it to hold gears. But, if a trans has low pressure, would I still be able to shift manually at the desired RPM?

I am running an Art Carr, aluminum deep pan, but still has the stock 200-4r filter. If I switch to the bottom feeder 700-4r filter, could this help?

Same question here. Mine is an Art Carr (CPT) transmission in a '70 GS. On the 400 B&M shift modifier kit the weights are changed as well as the springs. Will weight mods alone move the shift points in the 200 or should springs be swapped also?

Is there an article somewhere for this mod?

Thanks.

You could install a slightly stronger 2-3 shift valve spring. You have to drop the VB to do it.
