Got A 'new' re-wrapped steering wheel for the GN, is there anything special I need to do to change it out? Can it be done without using a puller?
Thanks , Joe

pull the horn button/ring, loosen the nut and see if it can gently be wiggled off. Probably not. I have used a puller on every one I have pulled off...the exception was an 84' WH1.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll give it a try without the puller first.

I have never used a puller to remove a steering wheel. (I grew up in a wrecking yard, too.--literally, as my dad owned three of them) Loosen, but do NOT remove the nut, then put boyh feet fimly on floor and with all your might, pull back on the steering wheel while rocking it back and forth slightly. If this doesn't work, STOP.......buy a membership in a gym, rinse and repeat.;) The reson you only loosen the nut is that if you removed it, when the steering wheel pops loose, it'll get you a Mike Tyson punch to the chin. This works very well. I have removed hundreds of steering wheels this way. If it just won't budge, have someone lightly tap on the shaft with a ball peen hammer while you give it the "Gung Ho!"

Thanks Ken, I'll try it, too-great description, too! :D

I've probably pulled 30 G body wheels in the yard. IMO, your safest bet is to to go Sears and by a Craftsman wheel puller - they're cheap. It's been hit or miss for me and not all will come of without the right tools. You might hurt yourself or wreck something in the process.....Good luck

Borrow a free puller from Autozone or possibly bend a $200 wheel... hmmmmm

This made me giggle:D I do the same thing! I've pulled many parts in junk yards as well..... Sometimes you just don't have the tools you need. Gotta flex the old muscles once in a while:eek:

Don't do it!!!

Don't do it you'll bend the shaft slot in the steering wheel!!! Then it will not go on right. Being in the locksmith field I know!!;) You will kick yourself if you do it like that.

just get the puller.you could bend the steering wheel, hurt yourself, whatever. i have seen this done and done it like 2 times in my 20 plus years as a professional auto tech.not a great idea, and you definatly cannot do this on modern cars,no way.up to you.

Awwww ........come on guys........ A steering wheel puller is for weenies. (j/king) Yes, a puller is the easy way to do it for sure. But I still pull them the old fashioned way. Can't teach an old dog new tricks, I guess.
If Autozone will loan you the puller, then by all means go get it and it'll just pop right off. If you plan on doing a few of them, then buy one at Sears. A balancer puller work, too.

The Same

Same way I have always pulled wheels. I also sometime will wedge my knees into the wheel, and pull on the top. Have a buddy tap the center with a soft mallet. Should work. Steering wheel pullers do work though, so I have been told.

Try the he man way first and if that doesn't work autozone for sure has the puller they lend it to u for just a deposit then wen u bring it back ur money is returned...that's what I did ..I didn't think I could get it out by hand so I didn't even try...but next time ill give it a shot
