I have an "interesting" home entertainment setup, and my TV/ Stereo/ Accessories are in the wall of my living room, but basically they are located in a closet in the next room. Needless to say, its very loud in that room. I have solid closet doors on there, but I need to do something to make it quieter. Is there some product to insulate the doors or something to kill the noise? Thanks for any help!

soundproofing

theres a cardboard material that looks like egg carton, ive seen it used at a gunrange on the base in charleston a few years back. i dont know how good it works but its worth a try.

I had to "soundproof" my home recording studio. It was tough. I found that if it's not airtight, it's not soundproof. A lot of the tutorial websites even tell you how to fill the power outlets and such to keep sound from sneaking through - supposedly, a pin hole is enough to ruin any soundproofing. And egg cartons don't do much. The only way to stop sound is by adding mass... I use thick MDF boards over my windows (on the inside) to keep the neighbors from complaining about the drums.

If you have vibration resonating through the house from the bass, you could try to put some kind of thick rubber feet under the speakers. (Might not sound as good without all the studs in the walls shaking though, hehe)

It's not easy... good luck!

I used that stuff but it was foam-based, not like cardboard. It's unbelievably good for making a quality acoustical environment. It will cut down the sound significantly. You can probably find it in musical places like American Musical Supply, Musicians Friend, etc.

If you are really talking about "soundproofing" you would need insulation in the walls, acoustic baffling and some of the new types or soundproof boarding they make. I assume you really don't want to tear down the walls.

Of course, you could do what people like the Rolling Stones did 40+ years ago.... hang mattress's on the walls!

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure you guys are fully understanding what I'm doing here. Simplified, I have a closet in a bedroom with a TV, stereo, etc. I want the bedroom itself quieter. The only area I can access is the closet doors. I would even consider putting something over the outside of the doors, as long as it wasn't really ugly. Thanks again!

If the closet doors are hollow you might consider drilling a few access holes and filling them with expanding foam. If you feel daring, remove the skin from the doors and pack them with insulation inside. Vibration causes the largest transfer of noise like B44 said. Isolating the sound devices from the floor as best possible will reduce noise also. The idea of adding MDF also as B44 said is a good idea too. It could nailed over the walls and painted to match. It would have to be nailed down good and tight, maybe even glued as well.

Okay - I misunderstood. I think you're saying you did one of those ghetto flat panel TV setups by putting everything in the closet of the adjacent room, and cutting a hole in the wall to view the TV and stuff? ;)

If you just need to seal off the closet in the bedroom, you could try rubber seals around the closet doors - may not work depending on the style door(s). If you want it to still look nice, you could build a wall to block it off behind the current closet doors so you can't tell... seal off the closet (inside of the doors so you can't see from the bedroom) with MDF and seal it up to be airtight.

Good luck!

Off subject but Brendan, I just ordered one of your CD's. I liked it! I need suggestions to find more artists of this style; I haven't bought a CD in 5 years. :(

Thanks, John! I just got the order! I really appreciate it. I'll get the CD out to you tomorrow. As far as finding other tunes... some people have compared my music to Jack Johnson (both Brushfire Fairytales and On and On are great albums - the latter is newer), John Mayer, Jamiroquai (more on the disco/funk/acid jazz side of things). Hmm...I'm also a big fan of Keziah Jones' new Black Orpheus album. You can also try G Love and Special Sauce, who also started out of Philly, for laid back bluesy jazz rock type stuff, if you can take the rap he tosses in here and there (no gangsta stuff). Cheers!
