I read instructions for installing upper and lower boxed control arms for 87 GN.

Instructions say place on jackstands so the rearend may be lowered "no weight on car" or "drop the rearend housing down completely" What does this mean? Do I have to rmove the spring and shock absorber before installing.

Lastly does someone have the HR tool #0599 with instructions and that works perfectly for me to buy?

Any other free advice to minimize mistakes/re-work is appreciated.

Thanks guys

Just put the jack stands on the frame in front of the rear wheels. You are taking the weight of the rearend to remove the bolts. If everything is in a bind then the bolts will be hard if not impossible to remove. Springs and shocks stay mounted. I think Gbody parts sells the tool.

Its not to bad to do. Just put the car up on jack stands under the frame so rear end can move around a little to get old stuff off and line up new stuff. Place the jack under the rear end pumkin so you can use the jack to help line up new control arms and take a little tension off while removing old stuff. You don't need to take off shocks/springs just pick top or bottom to start with and complete one before starting the next it will also help when doing the bottom if you do one side at a time because the rear end will move a little when you take off lower control arms, not so much on the top. Also on the bottoms get the control arm started on the frame first and then attach to the rear end. On the top I remove both and then press out old bushing and press in new before I install new control arms. If you cant find a bushing removal tool just buy one and save yourself lots of trouble. It makes the job really easy plus you don't want to brake the rear end ears off. Hope this helps its been few years since I did them.

thanks fellas. I am a do it yourselfer with limited funds and a willingness to do things right.

What kind of bushings do these arms come with?

I ordered a package. The bushings are poly something. The bushing removal tool will make things very doable.

If you cant get a hold of the tool, I successfully removed and installed the bushings in the rear housing with a ball joint press. It wasnt bad at all, maybe 5 mins per side. You can rent them at most local parts stores.
