Was wondering what peoples thoughts were on using Hydraulic fluid as ATF. Im not familiar as to what properties are taken into considration when picking an ATF but i have heard couple people using it.
I have access to military grade Hyd fluid MIL-PRF-83282 and from whats on this site its good up to some pretty high temps and its synthetic.

I was comparing the viscosity numbers at certain temps with MOBIL1 ATF im not sure if the lower the number the better or opposite but the HYD fluid numbers are def lower then Mobil1.

Any input?

do a search for tractor fluid .. after lots or reading I used john deere tractor fluid in the th400

Just ASSuming here, so I could be wrong but I think regular ATF has some additives in it for the frictions in the tranny and for the clutch in the torque
converter.

83282 used in acft hyd systems and struts don't need the additives. Plus acft hyd systems are ran at 3000+ psi so not sure it would work well in a tranny.

I've thought about it too...I too have access to 83282.:D

Well as far as the additives go on the link provided it does say that there are additives in the hyd fluid, whether theyre similar to the ones in tran fluid dont know. I did have one of the trans guys email me back and they said that it wouldnt work with the lock up converter being that it would cause the converter clutch to fail so im assuming that if one has a nonlock up one would be fine

I use the John Deere Hy-Gard oil in my TH400. No problems to report yet, shifts good and firm! Also have a mesh filter installed instead of the paper filter.

We use hydraulic fluid in our transmissions.

I was told to run straight hydraulic fluid by two and 50/50 (ATF) by one of the trans vendors on this site mostly because of the trans brake. Using NAPA brand the last two years and it seems fine. I did add a few quarts of DEX ATF for color since the hydraulic fluid is nearly clear.
