Hydraulic Fluid in Transmission?

I have heard that you can use hydraulic fluid in these transmission, what does it do to the transmission and is it good to use, any help would be great and thank's.

I've heard of people using tractor fluid too with good result, oNE locAL guybhere swears by it in his turbo 400. Just curious as to why a fluid other than the recommended transmission fluid?

About 30 years ago and more, tractor fluid was a good substitute for the couple blends of ATF available, but now we have lots of good choices of fluid, and the newer transmissions are much improved for performance and reliability, and you must use the newer trans fluid as recommended buy the factory, especially with their electronic controls.

We used type F and tractor fluid in the early years, but when GM introduced DEX VI, it proved to much better in performance and longevity. The DEX VI would last more than a season of racing compared needing 2 or 3 fluid changes.

For automakers to provide 100,000 mile warranties for truck and cars with HD use in their electronic transmissions, they specified only use the specific type newer fluids.

I've been using this stuff for a couple years. Is the dex vi better? For what it costs I surely hope it is. Has this stuff worked? It has for me so far. And it is less expensive.

I use Havoline MD-3, from the same manufacturer that used to make Chevron Merc Dex III. You can't get the Chevron fluid anymore, but my experience is the Havoline fluid is just as good, if not better. I recently changed my fluid and filter after a little over 40k mi. The fluid still looked fresh with no sludge and had the faintest amount of metal; other than what little my magnetic drain plug picked up. My friend who came by to help inspect my fluid and check my tranny for wear, was amazed how little there was for the way I drive and by comparison to others that he's seen in the past. You can get quarts from rural king or ruralking.com for $3.49.

I have had a few guys come in looking for hy-guard (JD) for their 200-4r's. Was curious myself how it worked out.

I have read on here a long time ago about using the tractor fluid in a transmission. I don't recall anyone saying it caused them a problem by using it.

For me though I have always just used regular transmission fluid, with out any problems.
