Hello everyone I am new here and gona purchase a grand national just wana make sure its the right one?? Heres my problem I have a man selling me a 1985 GN new paint new interior astro roof.. heres the down side its supposibly a new rebuilt engine with 1000 mi. when the #6 piston went out and the head. Seems like if a piece of metal got sucked in the intake and beat up the piston or the mechanic let sumthing lose in there??? Anyway just want opinions and a rough cost to redo the engine or just replace the 1 piston and head?? He is willing to sell to me as is for $6000 should I do it or continue my search??

Unless it is an ultra low mile, pristine example and you are ready to own it for a very long time, PASS it. Hot air cars don't bring top dollar and that has problems on top of not being the most desirable year.

Have you done your homework on Turbo Regals?
Are you familiar with the differences of the hot air cars and the intercooled cars?
Have you looked at several examples of each?
Do you have a local club that specializes in Turbo Regals or at least Buicks?

I think you aren't prepared as this is your first post. Do some reading on this site and Turbo Regal Web Site then you can make an educated decision on what you want to spend your money on.

Keep looking, preferably for an 86 or 87. That is way too much $$ for a non running hot air car.It would probably be too much $$ if even if it was running.

i bought a 85 with 63k on it, non running hot air for 1500. it needed a new starter and plugs,(thats taken care of) now it needs a new turbo seal. and after that it should be ok. but what i payed for mineis what you should be paying for yours. this is my first turbo buick. i really dont care if it hot air or IC. cuz i can just put a kit on it to make it IC and thats what i plan to do. but 6000 is to much. i say pass man...

Continue your search!!!!

Agreed. 6K for an '85 it should be pristine! If all you have is 6K to spend that would make a nice down payment on a nice 86 or 87. Call JJ Best for financing a GN.

Keep on looking for an 86 87 there is a lot of good deals out there people need money I just bought mine last month the guy was asking 12.000 I offerd 9k. He had no choice it was up for sale for 6 months he needed money bad so don't rush there out there

Walk away. Too much for it. If your new to TBs then the last thing you need is a problem child.

Just in case you don't know what "Hot air car " means. Before 86 the Turbo Regals didn't have intercoolers,on them, so they didn't make near as much power + the motors didn't last as long. The one + only hot air car i owned was prob around,1989 or so,+ it caught on fire under the hood,+ turned me off of the cars for a couple yrs.+ when i went back it was intercooled or nothing. turbo's make alot of heat,+ the intercooler cools down the air going into the motor. There were also other upgrades to the 86 + 87's but intercooling is the most important.
