As you can see in the sig. I have a KB Mark 1TXB cam. I like the performance but the noise is driving me nuts!!
Does anyone know the specs of this cam? And, What would be a good cam to replace it with that has the same specs? Or take me to school and suggest a cam that would help me get the best out of my combo.
Thanks.

i was very unhappy with the same kb cam switched over to an atr 208-201 cam im very happy with it the sound the idle and PERFORMANCE
here are the numbers off my kb cam card-
at .50 lifter rise.

cam lift 290 intake 290 exhaust
duration 208- 208

I just put in a Comp 212-212 I got from Cotton's[pn#69-235-4].It's as quiet as a mouse and pulls real good.Maybe you oughta look at that one?:)

I went through the same thing with the KB cam. Loved the power, but the noise drove me nuts. Lotsa ramp speed = lotsa noise, I guess.

I switched to an Erson KD 202 grind as suggested by Duttweiler at the time. It took me to 11.20 @ 120 with a 60-1 and stock, pocket-ported heads. Good cam, nice and quiet,

Thanks for the replys so far guys. Also does everyone reccomend the GM lifters?? I only want to do this one more time. This just disgusts me cause I only have 3500 miles on this build. and It is detailed pretty good. Hate to break into it but, this KB cam has got to go!

Maybe before you tear it apart check to make sure you have the proper preload on the lifters unless thats been done already. I've heard some good things about 204-214 sealed power or edelbrock cams. That what i will try next:D Frank

GM LIFTERS ALL THE WAY . THEY ARE BY FAR THE QUIETEST

cam

i got a lunati 210-205 i love the performance and the sound maybe its the right one for you i would recommend it

Try the Sealed Power 204/214 . Great cam , just dropped it in my last rebuild . Good price ,this quote came from a buddy who wanted to check the cam out by going for a ride in my car : "sounds like a stocker but goes like a f$%ker". great low/mid and pulls like Frankenstein on top :D . No downside to this cam , two thumbs up ! Do not be afraid of the larger exh duration, regardless of what others may say.It may not make sense on paper , but it sure works in my car :D. do a search on it .

I`m using speedpro 194/204 cam and idles smooth and pulls strong from 3,000 rpm on up.Great top end power. :D

Could somebody explain the noise a noisy cam makes and how to narrow it down to cam noise.

Charlloots,
Yes I did adjust to .050 preload. After hearing how noisy it was, I pulled off the tall valve covers(PITA) and id it again. No difference. I thought I could live with the noise but am fed up at this point. It is almost emberassing. As I understand it the KB cams are notorious for this. Also I used the lifters that came w/the cam.

i made the same mistake buying the kb lifters . just to much f***ing noise it was annoying. whatever cam you go with take your time to explain your combo to the vendor and stick with the gm lifters and you will be satisfied with your new rebuild this is why i love this board . i will never make a purchase again without posting a tread first ;) my choise would be atr or comp cams. you might want to put the gm rockers back on also if you still have them and they are in good condition;)

Saw a couple of updates at the Comp Cams website, might be interesting...

1. They have some cams that are nitrided now, for improved wear and less friction. Might be a good thing to help reduce cam eating problems without going roller?

2. They have some new turbo specific SBC grinds. Didn't see any specs listed, I wonder what sort of intake/exhaust durations they came up with. Might be educational to see. The ad says they were computer designed and take into account backpressures and such, I wonder if they'll do a custom TR cam using the same sort of analysis.

The last time I saw an ad with a turbo specific grind from one of those big cam companies, it was with the longer intake than exhaust duration. That ad was from the 80's I think.

Your noise, mostlikely is coming from the T&D rockers. I have installed several sets of these rockers for customers. I run them my self. The T&D's are known for making noise. I had a guy bring his TR back because he could not stand the rocker noise. I removed the T&D's and installed the factory rockers and no more rocker noise.

That is a very good suggestion chris. I am gonna try that first and see what happens. Easy enough to try. why didn't I think of that.

Make sure that you check the preload when you install the stock rockers. Most of the time with a cam change the push rod length will be different. You don't want to much preload, look for around .030. Good luck.
