Well i still have the smoking problem at start up that i have had since the motor was rebuilt. I have a new turbo and had the complete engine rebuilt, it has great compression, I'm using the right pcv valve, i have the K&N breathers but every time i start it up i get a puff of smoke and then a light steady stream at idle. I pull a spark plug and there is no oil build up. I've check the turbo twice, cleaned the intercooler, and checked the up pipe, no oil in any of these. The car runs and drives fine and i have good oil pressure. There is about 1200 miles on the engine and turbo since the rebuild. I'm stumped and i haven't driven the car much in the last two years because of the smoking problem. I think i'm ready to sell this dam car because now I'm starting to hate it.

Are your heads ported? Is your intake ported? Are you using a stock intake manifold gasket (WITH a valley pan)?

If you are using a gasket that does NOT have a valley pan, your PCV may be sucking oil. I am going threw the EXACT same thing as you, and I found out that the PCV is what the problem is. If there is no shield under the PCV (valley pan), then oil will be splashed into it and will be sucked into the motor.

What you can do to see is this: Pull off your up-pipe and open the throttle plate all the way. Shine a flashlight into your upper plenum and check to see if it is oily INSIDE the plenum/intake. Also, shine the flashlight up at the vacuum block to see if the last port in the throttle body is oily. If it is, then there is your problem.

Yes the heads and the intake are ported. The egr tower is ground down and welded closed. I'm using the gasket with the vally in it. Yes i had the heads dones and they said that the replaced the guides and seals.

OB, I'm assuming you are using synthetic oil? A friend of mine who rebuilds tr motors said not to use synthetic oil until you break the motor in, because with the synthetic oil it doesn't let the rings and stuff seat right. He did the same thing the first time he rebuilt one and had the same problem as you so he put regular oil in for a while and the problem stop. Just a thought .
He said as soon as he took the synthetic oil out and put the reg oil in it stopped smoking. Hope this helps.

no i'm just using regular 10w 30. I heard about that too so when i put it all back together i used the regular oil.

you might try disconnecting your pcv and see if the prob goes away........just block it off and the vacuum line

Maybe there fuel that is sitting in the cyl when you fire it up , to rich or something, leaking injectors, it was worth a try. I have the same problem but iam getting oil in the intercooler , probabey the pcv on mine.

If I had a nickle for every time I thought about that I'd.........

It's obvious that you have put alot of time and money into it to just give up on it. Use all the information from the guy's here and from the net (GNTYPE.org, ect.) before you do something you'll regret later on in life. I can't offer any more advice on how to fix your problem (sorry) cause my thoughts have already been listed here.

Good Luck.

I'm not sure if i would miss this car, it just sits in the garage and i never drive it because of the smoke problem. Its fine to drive it i just hate sitting at a light and seeing smoke and then realizing its my car. What really pisses me off is how much $$$ have in it and how little i could probably get for it because of the smoking problem, thats the only thing keeping me from selling it. I was thinking of pulling the heads and having them redone again, I think the guides are messed up because the compression is perfect and i have tried all of the suggestion listed. I have been trying on and off for 2 years to fix this problem. I hate this f**king car.

1987 WE4, power: windows, door locks, truck release, cruise, concert sound, factory radio, interior is in great shape. Exterior only mod is the GN wing, could use paint but it doesn't look bad. 94000 miles, engine, trans and turbo have less than 2000 miles. Car also has factory posi rear end. Runs and drives good only problem is the engine smokes, which i think might be either valve steam seals or guides. There are other new parts like, water pump, motor mounts, plugs, wires, O2 senor, etc

Mods:
New 44 turbo
big neck intercooler
complete rebuilt engine including
210/210 Billet roller

What are your idle BLM's? Maybe you're washing the cyl walls?

screw you azgn, if your not going to help then DON"T post, i hate these F$*king kids that do that, hey azgn your cool now run along.

come on guys we are all friends here, we all get mad at are car , i do all the time and posting on here makes you fill a little better.

Hey Obrut,
I had the same problem with my rebuilt with TRW pistons and rings.I replaced the valve stem seals and same thing. After I drove an park my car and got out I smell oil burning from the exhaust. So I called my engine rebuilder and he recommend me to use 1 can of ENGINE RESTORE (Chrome can) from Kragen`s Auto
Parts After using it I forgot all about it because that problem went away.I use to think about it everyday. The rings never got seated(broken in).Try a can on your oil & filter change.Let me know.:)

Listen cheer up, welcome to hot rods. Anyway, before you drive yourself crazy. What color is smoke and what does it smell like. Is it a sweet smell or a burned oil smell:confused:

Who's chip are you running? I have read that some of the Reds chip have a smoking problem at idle and start up.

azgn - something personal going on there? That wasnt real cool of ya. He seems to have tons of time and cash in the car and is looking for a little help.

Do you have the hi-volume front cover or is it the hi-vol add-on oil pump kit???

If it's the add-on kit, pull the hi-vol pump kit out and put a std oil pump kit in and see what happens...You may have too much oil pressure and oil is getting past the seals in the turbo on the exhaust side or maybe on the compressor side...

Pull the DP and take a look in the pipe for burned oil residue in the pipe...

I feel for you

I am going down the same road right now. It’s driving me crazy and every other day I say I am going to sell it but my wife reminds me all the money I keep dumping into it. I think we are all just masochists. It’s funny because my scenario is almost identical to yours. I HATE SMOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What’s real fun is when you’re at a car show and you have to wait until every one goes home for the night because of the embarrassment of smoking everyone out on startup.
