I think it might need a new bearing hub!

I've seen rotors worn in two(which was also the case on here). I knew The Omega needed a new bearing so I started to mess with it today since I picked it up from the junkyard. I think I found why they sent it there! Some people don't deserve to own a car. How long do you think it would take to actually grind through the outer part of the bearing(at least until it broke the outer half and then had to grind most of its way through the spindle and also almost ground the caliper in half?

I've only seen 1 that bad in 27 years of working on them for a living. It was a 1 ton and the guy wasn't paying attention to the truck.

And I thought this was bad

I thought I'd better show you the car this thread is about. It's gonna need some work I know but I think it's cool. I finally got some info from GM historical services. Total production for the Sport Omega was 696. I suppose that's why they only made it one year, it didn't sell. At the time I suppose it seemed gaudy just like the 70 Plymouth Superbirds were hard to sell when they were new. It certainly is not in the same class as the Superbird I know that, but just like it you either love it or hate it.

Brad, that's definately a unique car. Never saw one in person, only in print ads. It looks like the Olds equivalent to the Citation X11, Buick Skylark T-Type and Pontiac Phoenix SJ that had sporting ambitions at the time ('80 - '85).

Is yours the "Iron Duke" 4 or the 2.8 V6?

It looks like early Daytona/Laser rims on the car.

Good luck with the project!

Iron Duke at the moment. I'll change that when I get started on it. I was originally going to keep it low tech and do a carbed 3.4 V6, but I'm thinking of using my spare L67 SC3800. I've just got to get another harness and send it to Howell EFI where I sent my last harness. That'd put some "Sport" in the Omega. I'll have to upgrade the brakes too, those puny stock rotors weren't good enough when the speed limit was 55.

I can't remember the last time I saw an Omega. Have seen a few g-body Cutlasses lately though. Kudos to you for tweaking something unusual.

Thanks GNTIM. Also, if any of you could help me look for an NOS rear fender flare that'd be great. I'm probably dreaming if I think I'll ever find one so I suppose I'm gonna have to somehow repair the one that I have. It's missing a fairly large section so reconstructing it sure is gonna be time consuming. The GM part# for it is 22501905.

I got some work done this week while on vacation. I yanked out the Iron Puke/auto. I got the carb'd 3400 put together with a freshened 4speed manual. The engine bay cleaned up real nice. Also cut out the rusted battery tray and replaced it. The 3400 sure has a lot more room in that car with the serpentine belt drive and the manual tranny.

it's an Oldsmobile- the engine should be gold with some "rocket" stickers on the valve covers...

I never saw a front wheel drive axle due so much damage. I had an Isuzu Rodeo get towed in for noise from the back. The rear bearing was gone and the axle was rolling on the axle tube . the race was gone and the axle had about a 1/2 inch before it was ground through. They said it was making noise for about a week:rolleyes:

This looks much better than the original post.

I had a guy I talked to earlier this summer call me tonight. He sent me a picture message of a car he just picked up. Yeah you guessed it, an 81 Sport Omega. So now 2 of the 696 are here in the Mpls./St.Paul area!!

Well, it's been some time since I've worked on this car. I finally got it into the garage and I'm ready to tackle the floorboards. I said the floors was rusty from being in the dirt. Many have asked me why I would fix such a car in this condition and I've questioned myself at times too, but it's at the point I'm committed to getting it done. I did get all of the dents and kinks out of the roof over the course of the summer while I was busy getting my Charger painted. It took me a lot of time with the body hammers and blocks and a many hours of just bumping and feeling the roof skin to get it done. It truly is an art to returning the sheetmetal back to its original shape. I may be slow at it yet but I'm getting better. The roof/hood/ and trunk are some of the body panels you really should not use filler on because as the guy at the shop that painted my Lesabre said they are high abuse panels and see lots of slamming/vibration and flexing.
