I recently changed out my radiator for one without a trans cooler. I am now running an air cooler only (mistake). I need to set a fan switch setup for the trans cooler but not sure what is the ideal temp those trans like to run at? Thanks.

I like to see 155 to 170 running temp. 160 being optimal. You really need to go thru the rad then an aux cooler for proper cooling. Others have done it successfully, but I see more failures with the rad deleted when done marginally. Get a quaility LPD aux trans cooler and fan combo if the rad cannot be an option in the cooling circuit. Also a larger pan for more fluid capacity is helpful.

I run the stock rad with a SN95 [ mark Vlll ]fan and a plate style trans cooler and 10" fan on it. My coolant never sees the high side of 180* in 100* heat with the AC on.

My trans fan is tied to the rad fan and comes on with the rad fan so it is even cooler by the time it gets back to the trans in the 160*/170* range.

Dave is right and giving you sound advice that you should run the trans fluid through the rad and an aftermarket cooler.

Neither on there own is enough to do the job in a high performance situation.

If you must run an aftermarket trans cooler only get the most efficient one you can and mount a high cfm fan on it for best results.

That is where my problem started. The griffin rad is so efficient the engine temps are staying under 170 so the fans are never commanded on. I have my aux trans fan wired to main fans with a relay as well. Looks like I will get another rad with the cooler built in and I will wire up a seperate fan controller to the line comming out of the rad to detect turn on temp.

Why don't you get a griffin rad with a trans cooler built into it if you don't want both an oil and trans cooler in the tank??

I keep the stock rad because I need the oil cooler as well as the trans and temps are kept in check with the sn95 fan which is a lot cheaper than buying a 6/800 dollar rad/fan combo and will do the job just as well for much less money.

I have my fans wired into the factory harness through a caspers wiring and relay setup which plugs directly into the GM harness and comes on just like factory settings IE: predetermined temp [ set in the chip] or when the AC comes on.

That way if I ever go back to stock [like that will ever happen] everything is still factory in the wiring and not all cut or spliced which can look shitty or cause problems in the future.

Lpd?
Looking to upgrade on my truck

Dave

Where are these purchased at?

What the heck does LPD stand for??

LA Police Dept. ???

Lethargic Petrified Dick ???

Please let me know as my mind will just keep running over itself trying to figure it out.

Thank you for the edumacation.

I don't know why I didn't figure that out.
