I just picked up a used transmission from a friend and he stated that it may have a mechanical trans brake in it.

I was wondering ow i could test to verify the transmission in fact has it? The trans is laying on the floor in the shop right now.

Can i simply put the thing into 1st gear, try to rotate the output shaft and if it does not rotate, would tat mean it has a t-brake?

I know, simple stupid question...just want to know.

Its hydraulic mechanical So putting it into low will not lock it like you think.

Just put the trans in the car and once its running, pull it down to low.

The valve that hangs out the valve body is different, but you would have to take the pan off, then the valve.

crap, that sounds like work...

Thanks for the simple answer, too bad it isn't what i wanted to hear... the truth hurts sometimes.

You can just pull the pan. You don't have to remove the manual valve. It will have an extra land on it near the linkage connection.

thank you for the info. I see what the valve looks like on websites, but i am unclear about what you mean by extra land? isn't that valve be completely inside the valvebody? or does a portion of it stick out?

In the picture the stock manual valve is on top the trans brake manual valve is on the bottom. The portion that activates the trans brake is outside the valve body when it is in park. It is easy to see. P1010157.JPG

thank you very much. That is what i needed to see.

Thanks again.
