i went out a minute ago to get some popeye's chicken and it drove fine on site here at work, i get out on the highway it drives fine, even drove fine coming into work this morning. well i had to get gas and when i pulled out of the gas station i kinda gave it some gas ( 10lbs ) and it his second gear and i got on it harder and wammmmm. the car pulled good to the middle of second and then it's like it slipped or flared or something but it was bouncing of the limiter and knocking so i backed off...it goes into third, pulled good until about the middle of the gear and then the same thing. it drives fine at light throttle, but it doesn't like full throttle at all anymore. what happened? i just got this thing rebuilt by a reputable guy not even two months ago. how do you know if a converter is shot also? every since i've had one of these cars it's been nothing but trouble with transmissions, damn, and i wanted to back up my 12 second run sometime soon too. the fun never ends.

I am by no means an expert of any sort on tranny's, but I would check the tv cable to make sure it isnt loose (not enough line pressure), or possibly have the trans flushed and the filter replaced. What does the fluid look like? Does it smell burnt? Is it at the right level??

I can totally understand your problem. I went through a 3 speed when my regal was a 307, then I converted it to the GN drive, and not 3 months later the 4speed went out. Got it rebuilt at a GM dealer, and 6 months later it failed. Took it back to them, they fired their trans guy and farmed out the work. Well that lasted about 6 months also. Bought a supposed good trans from another GN owner and it blew apart in about 2 weeks time. I finally went to Jack Cotton and he hooked me up. No problems with it so far, but I havent been to the track with it.
The van I just bought had the tranny done by a good shop last year. A month after I got it, it died. I took it to a shop around here that is highly recommended, and it worked for about 2 months. After I got back from Jack's with it it is messed up again.
I know what you mean, I really do. I swear the 4 speeds 200+700 must be rocket science to these supposed "good" builders.

i really think that it's the converter to be honest. it's whining at idle in park, i don't know about drive because i parked it and i am not messing with it until i get my converter back from this shop that's flushing and rebuilding the extra one that i had.

Whining noise... check the front pump. If your swapping convertors pull front pump and inspect (5 minutes job). Also it sounds like its laying over before it hits 3rd. Had a similiar problem Godfrey. Adjust the detent cable to shift earlier. Tranny is not seeing the right amount of pressure to apply 3rd gear. Adjusting Detent cable to raise pressure. HTH

so you think that i'm losing pressure from the pump....i was thinking about this earlier and i thought, if the fins are bent in the converter like i speculated then why would it be making noise like that. i don't understand. so my questions are:
1. what are the symptoms of a bad converter?
2. what are the symptoms of a bad pump?
3. why the he!! can't i have any luck with these drivetrains?

Hey Godfrey, why not just call Andy directly about this, since he did your tranny recently, hope it gets straightened out for soon.

Godfrey,
All I can recommend is to replace the front pump if your replacing the convertor. Its cheap enough to do so with the tranny out. As far as convertor it may be wise to have it opened and inspected. HTH

My car had a noise when idling.....not really a whine, but a whirring noise. The trans still shifted fine at first. Then it gradually stopped upshifting. I dropped the pan and discovered a lot of silver debris. I changed the fluid and drove it and had the same problem. In less than 5 miles it did the same thing and had just as much debris in it. Turns out my stock D5 convertor disintegrated. Play it safe and drop the pan. If you have a whine, do like the others said and pull the trans out and check the pump and convertor. Many possibilities there.

i called andy twice and left messages, and emailed him once but no reply...he's probably busy as hell, and i don't want to just pop up at his house....i'm definitely not driving the car and i am definitely going to pull the trans.....i have been told that it sounds like more than one problem....either way it's going to cost me money that i don't have.....i have another converter that i sent to a local performance shop to have them cut open, clean, and freshen up that will be ready today....i thought that would be the fix but evidently it isn't just that one thing....

it's weird though it's like the car goes into nuetral in the middle of the gear...oh..a couple more questions:

1. who has done an external filter and how easy is it to do?
2. is there a gauge kit that you get to measure line pressure?

i swear i will be a transmission expert by the time i'm done with this car. i won't come close to bruce doing this from the womb, but i'll have more knowledge than i ever thought about a trans.

Pressure gauge will reveal wonders. If its slipping you will see it with a pressure gauge.

but i don't know where to begin with that though...i've never seen anyone do this before......is there a kit to just screw in or something? where would it go on the car?

go to deltrans in DE right off 896 i know it's a hike but 2 years and 40 k later I'm still as happy as day one. :)

i talked to andy and he truly believes it's the converter. i'll be picking up my freshened converter tommorrow. thanks gn4u2c, but andy does a good job the converter just wasn't up to the job. the trans still shifts great at part until about half throttle but then it just won't pull anymore. there is something rattling around in the converter, and i'm hoping that it didn't start spitting metal out. god i hope it didn't, i don't need to spend another 800 bucks on this thing.
