I have spent some time on the ol Buick doing some much needed things that I have been putting off. I change anti-freeze yesterday and converted the A/C over to 134-A. I did everything right and was right proud of myself that I accomplised them both in what time I had yesterday. The car sits in the garage with my Z-71 gas hog. The Z-71 started and backed out of the garage yeasterday just perfect.
Today after work I thought I would go out and fool around with the car a little bit. I started the Z-71 and put it in reverse to back out of the garage.....It wouldn't move.. I put it in drive...It would move forward. I put it in reverse...nothing. The RPMS drop a little but nothing until you give it quite a bit of throttle. It will move in reverse but as soon as you let off the gas it stops instantly.
I got it out of the driveway and put it in drive and drove it. Forward is good. Still no reverse, unless you give it about 1/4 throttle. The truck will move but as soon as you let of the gas it stops suddenly. No noise from the tranny, no fluid, no smell, nothing. This tranny has only got about 3000 miles on it, but no warranty any more. Any thoughts. Anyone with Dynomite???

stop trying to drive until you check for codes. it could just be a bad sensor or something. you don't want to tear it up just trying to move it. any check engine light?

what trans is it?

i know the sensor on the side can cause problems(on the fords it is the mlp or manual lever position sensor) there is an adjustment that is done it neutral, there are two lines on the sensor that need to line up when in neutral.

check over all the wiring and sensors to the trans.

check all your ground locations in the engine compartment.

last but not least check that your parking brake is not on. i had a friend do this one time. :)

Longshot maybe, but check your brakes to make sure they aren't hanging up/sticking. Usually, going backward will free them, but ya never know.

Well maybe it's something lame like it's not totally in reverse?

But it sounds like a tranny pump issue to me. Might need to test it for pressure.

Your reaction sunshell is stripping. It will lose reverse when this happens it's about a $25 part, but the trans must come out and apart to swap it. Can be done it a day, this is a very common issue with 700 R4,4L60E trans.

You busted the sunshell (aka Beast) They came from the factory with a lousy partial weld. The new ones are welded 360 degrees. Very common. Gotta pull it out & tear it down. You can check codes, not a bad idea, but my $$ is on the sun shell.

'94 sunshells dont usually break or strip '96 and up are more common. Drive the truck if you have no rev 2nd and 4th its the sunshell if its just a reverse issue it s probably rev/input clutches.

I agree with jon86.broken Sunshell = no reverse,2nd or 4th.sorry to say but its going to have to come out.

Could also be input housing has a leak where the shaft meets the housing it self. This will toast the clutches, this is not a cheap peice like the sunshell.

I took the truck for a little drive last night. Up to the gas station to get gas for the lawn mower. It is about a 6 mile trip one way. After I filled up the can, I started the truck and pulled it into drive. As I eased away from the pump it all went to pot. A big clunk and then it sounded like metal pieces churning. The truck did not want to move. I worked the gear shift up and down through the gears as I eased into the gas. I found that if I shifted to first manually it would move. I could get up my speed and shift manually.
I got home and was actually able to drive at 55 and 60 with no noise issues. I noticed though that if I went intopassing gear, that a vibration would occur.
I runded the corner from home and my neighbor that lives on the corner just happened to be out drinking a beer. I don't hardley ever talk to him, but thought I would take the oppourtunity last night. He owns a Transmission shop. That is his life. He had worked on the truck previously when I had to have shift solenoids replaced in the old transmission. He said it really needed to be rebuilt then, but to see how things went after the solenoid replacement. Well....it went like crap. The truck shifted sloppy, rpms flared between shifts, it sucked.
I got a wild hair and went on-line and found this guy through e-bay that owns a place called "MAD DOG TRANSMISSIONS" I purchased a "PUNISHER" transmission from the guy and a guy from church helped me put it in the truck. I think I paid around 1400.00 I had the transmission about 7 months before I finally had the time to install it. As soon as the truck was removed from the lift I hated that transmission. It was supposed to have a nice firm shift, but it was anything but that. It shifted very soft. I contacted "MAD DOG LOU" and he sent me a fax about a screw I could turn if I removed the pan to sharpen the shifts. I think it was called a tourqe motor screw. I did just as the fax said and my shifts improved slightly. The one thing I did notice that firmed up was going from park to drive or reverse was somewhat harsh. I didn't have time to deal with it. I kept my old transmission just in case though.
I confessed to my neighbor about the internet transmission.
He is going to come down and pick up my old transmission and tear it down. He said that my old transmission didn't sound like hard parts problems and it would be better to fix it then the "PUNISHER PIECE OF POOPIE" HE said that one had hard parts problems which was pretty obvious. I think I will be looking at about 1600.00 by the time it is all said and done. I told im he could have the "PUNISHER" and he said he gave credits for cores. I think he will work with me the best he can.
I doubt there is anything that I can do about the "PUNISHER". I did google "Mad Dog Transmissions" to find that I am not the only one that received a piece of junk from this guy. I don't know what I can do though. I paid with a credit card but it has been so long ago. The warranty was 12 months 12,000 miles. I am past the 12 months but nothing close to 12,000 miles. I think I put about 2300 miles on that transmission.
Ahhhhhh, You get what you pay for...........

What he had you do was to turn the epc(electronic pressure control up) up.That increases line pressure. When turning it up it will make it engage harder and firm up the shifts.I know that the ones we were getting from our trans supplier were set alittle low.We would give them a 1/4 turn.Sounds like you have somebody that knows what he is doing now,so good luck.Hopefull he gives you a good deal on the rebuild.
