My 8.5 currently has a peg leg and I'd figure Id upgrade to 30 spline since its the same price as the 28 and I'll be replacing axles also. I do mostly all work myself. The only things I wont do is weld or rebuild engines or transmissions. Anyhow, I'm wondering how hard of a job this is, and if the installation of the 30 spline is any different from a 28? I've read in the descriptions about having certain bearings etc. and needed to make sure I'd be capable of doing this in my garage. Anyone have any helpful tips or hints? Or should I just take it to a shop? In case it matters, yes I have swapped axles before, but never removed or installed a differential. Thanks for any help!
 
The 30 spline eaton requires larger bearings and races. The timken part number for the bearings is LM102949 and the races is LM102911. If you go to summit moser sells them in a kit - part number msr-sb10. This comes with the two bearings and races. You can pick up a shim kit from your local parts house cheap.

Swapping the carrier and axles and using the same gear-set is straight forward. Measure the backlash prior to removing the main caps. Then once the new carrier is in place set up the shims to the same backlash measurement.

This way the mesh of the gears is the same as before. Note that the bearings also require a pre-load on them. That is once the proper shims are selected, need to use one on each side that is 4-thousands (0.004") thicker.

What special tools will need for all that. Is there a way to measure preload?
 
Will need a dial indicator to measure the backlash.

While setting the backlash, use shims that can be pushed in firmly by hand. Then once the backlash is correct, use a shim on each side that is 0.004" thicker then the ones used to set the backlash. These will need to be tapped in with a hammer. That will pre-load the bearings and retain the backlash setting.

In addition to backlash you want to verify that the tooth contact pattern is correct.

Not really as the same case & gear set is being used. As long as the backlash is set the same as before the gear mesh will also be the same.

When I put my 30 spline in I needed to change the lash slightly (still in spec.) to get a good pattern.

I understand what you are saying. To me, if the gears are already run-in, I'd be hesitant to change the pattern. That's all.

I agree completely with what you said also about the relationship of the pinion gear to the ring gear is the same because the pinion depth isn't changed. My issue was I have Richmond gears that I had previously installed new at .014" lash (.010"-.014" spec for that set) and when I put the 30 spline carrier in .012" lash had a better pattern than the pattern at .014" and looked closer to the new gear pattern I had pictures of.
