I just received my ultrachip from Casper's Electronics. It is the 84-85 Turbo P/N 103041, VERSION 3.02 28~30LB. Injectors. My car is basically stock with the exception of a cone air filter & Flowmaster catback exhaust system. I use nothing but 93 Octane from Shell Gas here in the Dallas,TX area on my T-Type. He said it is safe to use it on setting 4. I don't have a scantool so to be on the safe side should I use setting 3 instead ? The car is running great now. I will be installing the chip this weekend. What do you think?

Setting- max turbo-rev limit-speed limit-timing-features
0 n/a 0.0 0.0 n/a anti-theft
1 12.0 4800 65 22 valet
2 14.7 5250 125 22 stock
3 15.6 6000 135 18 92 octane
4 16.2 6000 135 20 93 octane
5 17.8 6000 135 22 race 98
6 19.0 6000 135 24 race 110
7 20.0 6200 160 26 race 113

Personally I wouldn't go above 3 until I got a scantool. Plus tell your friends not to mess with stuff in your car anymore. While I was filing up gas once one of my friends put it clear up to seven just messing with it because he didnt know what it was. Good thing I saw him put it down when he was done.

Remember that a scantool could possibly be the best mod for these cars. Not only does it protect your engine, but tuning is really the key when it comes to turbo buicks.

how much hp/torque will I gain in setting 3 ? About how much time in 1/4 run from original setting ?:)

The rule of thumb whether it's right or not is about 10 hp to 1 lb of boost. Even though you are gaining 1lb you are also losing 4 degrees of timing. I'm willing to bet that your gains will be pretty minimal. (thats why i said 3 was ok I was origionally gonna suggest stock) as for 1/4 time I dont think we have a public track anywhere in Wyoming so I can't help you there.

Ultra chip

I have the Ultrachip in my 1984 GN and have found that I was getting knock on positions 3 and 4 on 92 octane gas. I just installed a Spearco intercooler and just got back from a test drive and could run on setting 3 with no knock at 15 lbs of boost. Setting 4 started to show knock, so I let off. I plan to install the SMC injector this week end and see if I can get up to 19 lbs of boost. Let you know how if I can finally get to settings 5,6,7

ultra chip

I have the Walbro FP, hot wire kit, adjustable FP reg., 30lb injectors, Spearco intercooler, 1987 ECU, Caspers complete 1987 engine wiring harness, 87 coil, module, Casper Ultra chip, Casper TPS module, new rebuilt garrett turbo charger, rebuilt engine, V8 Olds radiator, duel ramcharger electric fans, K&N air filter, 87 MAF, standard guages, tach, boost, knock, oil pressure, water temp, and I almost have the SMC injection installed. Everything is mounted just have to get the wiring hooked up today and then I can turn up the boost. I can't wait to see what my laptop readings will be today.

Update

Well I got the SMC hooked up and this is what happened:
Set the Ultra chip on setting #3 (15lbs boost) and the SMC needed to be set on 7 to get the exhaust gas temp to 1550. Instructions said that you should keep it between 1550-1600F
Next I set the Ultra chip on #4 (16lbs boost) and needed to bump the SMC to setting 8.
Next I set the Ultra chip to #5 (17lbs boost) and needed to bump the SMC to setting 9 exhaust gas temp went to 1640 and I ran out of SMC adjustment the dial wouldn't go past 9. I had the knock guage showing 2 lights so I backed off and called it a day. I think that I may need a larger nozzle before I can go to setting #5 on the Ultra chip. Need to talk to Steve from SMC and see what he thinks.

i put my ultrachip on setting 4 once and the knock jumped up to 9 at idle and i hit the gas so slightly to pull over and i glanced over and saw like 52  or something crazy....dunno what happened but ive never wandered off 3 since then...and my idle is irratic in stock setting 2 but fine in setting 3...is that the same for yours...

aLSO: any pics of the engine, i'd like to see how the spearco looks...thanks

another update

We just had a GN club meeting and got to talk with some of the more knowledgeable members. They say to tune the car without the alcohol first. So it looks like I need to get out the Turbo Link and get everything adjusted first. I will keep everyone informed as progress is made. All I can say for now is it was really fun even at 16lbs boost I can hardly wait till I get to 19. The Ramchargers duel fan arrived today so that will be my project for this weekend. As far as pictures go, I took alot of digital shots when I installed the Spearco intercooler, but I don't know how to post them. Give me some instruction on how and I will be more than happy to post them. The intercooler install went great, it will take you a weekend to get it done. I could do one in half the time now, but I was taking my time and making sure I didn't screw any thing up. I put in an exhaust gas temp probe at the same time and 30lb disc injectors, which added more time.

the easiest way to post pictures is www.webshots.com just sign up and it explains the rest, then post the link...it will all come together...the spearco definatly gets my attention b/c I would like to keep the stock turbo, and 30lb injectors for now, hopefully by adding just the spearco I will be able to run alot better w/o having to get bigger injectors or turbo.....let me know when them pictures get up, im very interested....oh and if you dont mind me asking how much was the full kit...i think i heard $1200 before but i dont remember...thanks, steve

Pictures

OK I think I have the pictures posted, you will need to go to webshots.com and do a search for member "mrbuick101" let me know what you think?

beautiful car....it basically looks like you just spun the turbo outlet so it shoots forward which goes to the FMIC and makes a long loop around the engine compartment to the intake.

any problems with the intercooler pipes burning anything? what kind of performance gains did you see? and how much?

Turbo mounting

Yes, you are right, the turbo outlet is rotated 100 degrees.
No, I have not had any problems with hot pipes
As for the third question, I am still trying to figure out my tune up. I just found out that my throttle plate must not be all the way open, because the MAF readings on my turbo link are only 170 and they should be 255. I have only had the Spearco on for a week and the SMC for a few days, but yes I have really noticed that the performance has improved. I think it will get much better once I get the TPS and throttle plate sorted out. I just got the Hooker exhaust system today and need to get it installed, which should really help, because I have a single exhaust on it now. I will let you know more as I get it sorted out. Keep in touch.
