Hey guys,

As some of you know, I'm in the process of swapping head gaskets (and doing some other stuff while I have the top end apart). My question now is about the intake manifold gasket. Is it just the metal valley pan, or is there another regular gasket style in addition? When I looked up gaskets on summit etc. they only show what looks like just a regular gasket, not a metal valley pan, while at the local auto parts store, they only show a metal valley pan. I want to put this thing back together correctly, so I was wondering what you guys have done as far as intake gaskets go. Metal Valley pan, regular gasket style, or both? Also, if the valley pan is used, whether in conjunction with a regular style gasket or not, can the old one be re-used, or should I pop for a new metal valley pan as well? Thanks!

I have always used Fel-Pro gaskets and they should include the pan and the gasket around the ports. Along with them you should have two rubber strips that seal off the front and the back of the intake manifold where it meets the block.

Also an important tip is to put silicone in the corners where the Block/Heads/Intake Meet then install the rubber end strips. That area is prone to leaking if not installed correctly.

Here is a picture of the Intake Manifold Set you should get:

so just to clarify, its the one-piece metal valley pan, in addition to a set of regular style gaskets which just go around the ports (essentially the picture you posted plus a set that looks like this)

Or do you mean that the pan also seals around the ports and that is all that is needed?

If you have a fel-pro part number handy for a kit that includes everything I'd need that would be VERY helpful.

Sorry for being an idiot, I just want to make sure I do this right the first time, ya know? Also, if it is the metal pan plus the gaskets I showed, on which side of the pan do the regular style gaskets go? I would assume between the valley pan and intake, rather than between the valley pan and head? Thanks for answering my annoying little questions, this board is priceless to me anytime I do a job on my buick for the first time, it assures me I'm doing it right... who needs a haynes?

I have always used just the pan never heard of using two gaskets. Have used a little spray on Permatex in the areas around the ports as well.

I am showing that the Fel-Pro Part Number is MS96037. Might want to double check before you purchase.

all you need is the felpro set im in the process right now replacing the valley pan gasket since two of my lifters don't want to play any more.

You can use either. The Felpro 1200 is for the stage I heads and it can be used on the original by itself. You don't need both, but if you use the 1200 you will need to cut the valley pan off and mount it in the valley to keep oil out of the PCV valve.
