Bought a new shaft and kit for that turbo and noticed it has up and down play after putting it together. Is this because the turbo isn't fully primed with oil? I just used a light coating of assembly lube on parts when I put it together.

how much are we talking Jessie?

throw a dial indicator and see what its extreme is.

but yes, there is some slight play after a rebuild... in the area of

.002 -.003 for side loading and for endplay .001-.003.

Just went out and messed with it a bit. Just barely rubs the side if I push hard on it. I'm thinking it's because it's dry (hopefully). I can't imagine it having any more play than before since it has a new shaft and bearings and there was no rubbing on the housings.

yea... ya might wanna open it up and measure the bearings.

sometimes a "New" turbine shaft is a reground old one and your bearings might be the wrong oversize.

if not, and they spec out... id lean towards the cartridge and confirm the bearing seats are wallowed or been spun.

a 20 minute go over is better than complete failure. piece of mind if you will.

but dry, it sounds too loose to me. hard to say without feeling it myself.

Pm me if you need a new Garrett t3 bearing housing or any of the bearings

I'm gonna prime the oil system first and check it then. I'll let you guys know what I find if I get that far today.

Prime it with oil and see. I just got my Te62 back from PTE and when I spun the wheel, it made a ringing sound. I called Wes at PTE, he said that some make a little noise. It also had a little play, but after I primed it up with some 10w40, it was better. Wes was very helpful because he has had to fix my 62 3 times.

After I primed it a bit it tightened up some. I started the car and let it idle for about 5-10 minutes and checked it. Seems about right now. Doesn't touch the sides so I'm calling it good. No more oil on the comp side either which I really like.
