Is my trans shot?

well i had my trans rebuilt last september. was great til today, shifted real firm, a lil too firm , but it was good. today i got on it a lil, and the 1-2 shift flared , it smelled like popcorn and now the 1-2 shift that usually rattles ya,is very weak. the 2-3 is still firm. anyon e know what i did? burn out the 2nd gear clutch mabe? i really cant afford another rebuild right now. suggestions,comments, thoughts, help.
