As a fellow '86 GN owner, I'll start by congratulating you on your purchase. That's a helk of a find.

If you choose to do the modification thing, the best advice I could give you is to read a lot on this board, and look a lot at people's signatures. Many people put their modification list and best quarter-mile times in their sigs. This can give you a very good idea of how to go. Something else you need to consider is "what is your goal?". Many people just start throwing parts at their car without a clear goal in mind. It's a recipe for disappointment. I would suggest finding someone who has a GN that's in the ball park of what you want to achieve, and follow their modification list (at least roughly).

If you're looking for a combo that will easily keep-up with the modern Vettes out there, I might suggest looking at my combo. The car runs mid-11's on 100-octane unleaded with slicks and mid-12's on 93-octane and drag radials. For you, the only things I would consider changing are using a stock-location intercooler (SLIC) to allow your radiator to keep working well in Phoenix, and you might substitute alcohol injection and 93-octane for my 100-octane. You can do these mods for $15k, and my engine has never left the engine bay. BTW, very rarely do I see GN owners putting batteries in their trunks. Nothing inherently wrong with it, just not common in our world. If you go this route, just remember that you must upgrade your FUEL SYSTEM (new fuel-pump and hot-wire at the minimum) and your TRANSMISSION (more durable components and at least a re-stalled stock converter) FIRST. Once you start making any more HP than stock, your stock fuel system will quickly reach its limit, and the transmission won't be far behind.

Before you go the modification route, I will suggest thinking about something. Most of the people on this board have modified their cars. Many of those who have would LOVE to have a 100%-stock low mileage car again. For example, I would gladly consider trading my car, even though it's only a 43k mile car and only 6-months after having been newly painted, for a 100% stock, low-mileage car like yours. My warning is that once you modify a bunch of stuff, you might find that you regret it years later. Nowadays, low-mileage bone-stock GN's are very hard to find, especially 86's. There are many people on this board who would pay top dollar for your car or trade a nice car that is already fast for your car. If you want a fast, lower mile GN (say under 50k miles), you can easily get one for the money you would make selling your car and probably have some cash left-over.

These are just things to think about. At the end of the day, it's your car, you can do what you want. I just hope you don't look back 10 years from now and say, 'Man, I had a 4,000-mile bone-stock GN, and I wish I had it again!"

Good Luck,

Well put it this way, he's making all the other low mileage cars more valuable. I really don't understand the logic behind getting a super low mile car and then modding it to hell and back. Ruining a car like that is the most idiotic thing one can ever do.

OP if you think about a modded car. One with mods to the engine already, majority of those engines were built, so they are as good as a car with low mileage. The engine is brand new built, low mileage and power to back up what you plan on doing to it.

Please do not mod it. You will ruin it for good. Do no daily it, please.

I agree

Sounds just like the guy I sold my low mile all original 87 gn to
I kept it garaged and mint
Smelled new
Now

He bought it leaves it outdoors Rain snow whatever

Bottom line is if he's got the money he can do anything he wants to it
Even though we all think its stupid

YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID

I say mod the shit out of it. These cars don't have that many years left in them where they're still worth somehing and can be driven every day.

First you don't need a shit load of 'mods' just yet. You need a new set of injectors and matching chip (I recommend 60's and either a TT or Baily chip), translator and newer MAF sensor, a new timing chain (I recommend stock), new valve springs, rocker shaft supports, new rocker buttons, a larger power wire for the fuel pump, a bigger fuel pump, (your drivers side header might not be cracked yet, but that'll have to get addressed soon enough), an adjustable wastegate, new hoses on the wastegate solenoid circuit, breather bypass kit for the PS valve cover, new plug wires, some sort of scan tool... scanmaster and powerlogger are the most common, a wideband O2 sensor kit, so method to monitor fuel pressure, and a complete spring cleaning.

While you' waiting on all those 'non performane' parts, flush the entire break system with new fluid, drain the coolant and replace it with 20% antifreeze and RMI-25, drain the rear axle and put synthetic fluid in it, and add a transmission cooler in with a drain plug on the trans pan.

ONLY after EVERY weak link is address AND the car is running right do you even consider adding actual performance parts.

Headers, cams, heads, etc... are a waste of money on a stock car and will most likely slow you down.

I also have a feeling the sealed truck gets hotter than the engine compartment in AZ.

Perfect combo

Buy a car for 15k
Put 5k worth of upgrades
Car is worth 11k
Not many people want to buy a modded car
Only slightly modded because they rather do the mods themselves

If I were starting over modding a stock TR I would do fuel pump, injectors, adjustable fp regulator, alcohol injection, dutt neck IC, a TA-49 (or equiv), ported exhaust elbow, gutted cat, cat-back exhaust and a cold air kit. I would also keep aside all the stock parts for down the road if I wanted to put it back to 100% stock (except the fuel pump). Save $$ aside for when the trans takes a dump.

That being said, if I had a low mileage stock gn I would probably keep it that way and enjoy it.

I want to see pictures and proof of 4k miles first if it set in moisture or not been kept up it still not worth as much as a 40k car clean or so on but if u want to clean it every day trailer it to u can do that but car shows are for the birds but its ur car do what u want just call ur self lucky but if u start mods its hard to stop to believe me there all money pits any way u look at it. Its just if u can get wt u put in it back out of it.things happen and could have to sell someday been there to but maybe u won't have to good luck and put lots of thought in it first

Damn that is one long sentence!

Sorry maybe my spelling ok i'll work on these next ........... its a southern thing ha ha

Earl about nailed it regardless if you are going to mod or not. You'll need to go through all listed if you plan to run the motor hard (or at all for that matter). I just tuned up a 17K car. I did spring cleaning, fuel pump, hotwire kit, hoses, belt just to get her running without knock. I replaced powermaster brake system. I plan very minimal mods because a) I want her to be worth something down the road (more modded cars than non) b) I don't want to dump crazy money into it just to enjoy it.

Like others have said, if you are wanting to go super quick, just purchase a modded, well running car from one of the noted guys on this board. First, will be done right, second, you'll go really quick and third you'll benefit from all the mistakes they made getting there rather than making your own mistakes on your dime.

If I were you, with a $15K mod budget and ultimate plan was to go quick, then I'd take the $15K and buy a good to go modded car. Take your car and either keep as roll of the dice investment, or sell to someone who's more into the stock deal and use the money to go 9 seconds or quicker.

GNRick, that was actually one really long sentence followed by a second, not so long sentence. Both filled with great points. :)

If you have 15 K to spend on this buy a car cover for $100.00 cover this one up and leave it alone watch the price quadruple!! and buy another 11 second car for $14,900 that is already done!!!!!!! or buy Sullys car for 18K and run low 9s as soon as you get home with it!
That car of yours if nice and a true 4k on the timer (untouched)will be worth 60 to 80 k in 10 years
seriously! theres a stage 2 9sec Clean GN in the for sale section right now for 14500!

I guarantee you will regret modding a 4k mile car. It may be 1 year down the road or 5-10 years but you will wish you'd just bought one ready to run and not dump another $15k into. Just doesn't make sense. Hell I wish I'd just bought one already built and mine was 100k+ miles and needed nearly everything. Now I've got about $20k invested in a car that is maybe worth $12k. Now I love my GN, don't get me wrong, but after 3-4 engines, 3-4 tranny's, and a silly amount of money dumped into this thing, I could have done much better. My car STILL needs a paint job too - another $4k for a good job at least. Please don't mod this thing.
