I'm in Hawaii. My GN is rust free for now. It is from stateside. I would like to keep it rust free. My wife is taking up the garage so I cant keep it inside. :(

Had a hard time finding a rust free car here. Anyone have some advice on keeping the doors from rusting? I am up for any advice on keep in rust at bay anywhere on the car..... I am just focusing on the bottom of the doors because that is the worst spot I have seen here. I know I should make sure the drain holes are clear. Should I spray some wd40 in the holes an call it a day? I just saw a royal purple max film commercial and it got me thinking that may be a good thing to spray in the drain holes since it creates a film and is synthetic.

Ryan,

It is definitely a good idea to keep those drain holes clear. How is the weatherstripping/dew sweeps where the windows meet the doors? Usually if those are cracked or aged they will allow water to drip into the door.

I sprayed my truck doors with WD40, I read somewhere that if the drain holes are clogged the water stay trapped in the door causing it to rust over time...want hurt :p

What you could do is remove the door panels and spray phosphoric acid (OSPHO) inside the door. Saturate it with it. This should neutralize any surface rust in there and form a barrier against rust starting up. Be sure to wipe if off any painted surfaces. It's watery but dries like paint in a few days.

Red

Is that the same stuff as Rust converter? The stuff that turns rust black?

It's a green liquid with the consistency of water. It turns white, basically, when dry. You should be able to find it even at home depot or Ace Hardware. Buy a gallon. Only about $12 or so. You can put it in a spray bottle and saturate anypart you wish to protect, or neutralize.

hands down, best thing you can use is called "Seal Out"

It's a yellow, waxy type inner panel rust proofing we use in the body shop, you need a undercoating gun w/ a wand, most body shops will have these.

This stuff never dries hard, which lets it "heal" it self and always keeps the surface sealed, thus preventing rust, and significantly slowing down any existing rust.

Look into it.....

Fluid Film over WD40

If anyone is going the WD40 route I would recommend Fluid Film Fluid Film® | Corrosion Preventative, Lubricant and Rust Inhibitor over WD40.

Many plow guy's use this on the underside (rusty frames) etc..of their trucks and all over their plows and many have gone as far as to treat one area with WD and the other with Fluid Film and they noticed a big difference in the metal that was treated with Fluid Film after a winters plowing.

Everyone has their own magic potion....anything you use is better than nothing and some are better than others.

take panel off, hose out any dirt, let dry, spray it down with cavity wax such as DINITROL 3125 This is what the hi end of hi end shops use and your doors will NEVER rust from the inside.

take some 10W-40 and put it in a squeeze bottle (like used in restraunts for ketchup) and pop your door pannel off and squirt the hell out of the inside of the door. Let it drip out and your golden. I've had a 85 grand prix and a 87 cutlass that this was done to and both were winter driven for over 10 years here in Manitoba, Canada and never had even an speck of rust on either one. It was a trick back in the day these cars were newer. My dad used to do it to every g-body car that went through the dealership back in the late 80's as per GM at the time.

edit * do this once a year

3M Rust Fighter. It doesn't convert or do anything to existing rust, but it WILL prevent rust. Keep the drain holes clear. My .02 ---Keith
