I tried 27"....too little, then 28" ET street, then 28"slicks. I also have the new MT street radials, 275/60 (28"tall) I got a 1.52 60' with those steel belted units. Sweet tire! I always use 28" now. A TE-61/PT54 with a .63 housing produced insta-spool that just was too much, too soon. POW! A larger housing helped alot. I bought a .85 housing to slow down spoolup. Picked up 3mph, and better 60'. I have a non-lockup 9" Art Carr. Best 60' and response I have ever had with a GN. Feels fine on the street.
Even with a 28" tire (ET street or Drag Radial), I can spin on the street with just rolling on the throttle at any speed under 30mph. Doing a burnout combined with a sticky track is a totaly different senerio. I wish I had skipped the smaller turbos and jumped right into a decent sized hairdryer. It seems we have the same tranny work. I also have a T-brake, and full Art internals. Love'em!. Just trying to stop someone from making the same mistake as me. If you do get a PT54 (TE-61) or smaller, make sure to ask for the larger turbine housing. I still think a GT67 (TE67, PT67) is a perfect turbo. I ordered a .85 housing for that turbo, but you could also ask for a .63 for quicker spool. Call Red Armstrong.
