Just got a 3200 stall non LU conv and trans brake put in at Art car's shop last week. In the next few weeks I'd like to loose the stock squirl cage for something with a bit more growing room. My plan is to have a mid 11 sec street car with a turbo I dont have to change out every year for smog inspection. I'm leaning twards the TA60 or TA61 or, Is there such a thing as a GT61 with a inlet bell like a TA? Could I just put a breather tube on one? Thanks, and Merry Christmas.:)

Just call PTE, or Limit. I'm 99% sure you can get any small shaft turbo with a TA compressor cover. Have you checked out a GT67? Limit sometimes calls it a TE-67, but it has a GT compressor, 67mm. The P-trim is a small shaft turbo, I bet you can get a TA version. Low 11s and into the 10s....no problem. Turbo is around $700. Or you could go smaller with a PT-61, I think that has a GT style compressor wheel, maybe you can get a TA version?? I'm sure you could tap into any TE style inlet bell and be OK. JB weld a pipe into it. Cut dovetails into it to mechanicaly lock into place.

I was eyeing the GT67. It might be not spool as fast as I'd like since I've put a 28" tall tire on the car. I dont want to over-turbo the thing since it's 99% street driven. If it's abit under-turboed I can just add alky (which I plan on doing any way). I'm just hearing good stuff about the new GT turbos and may get one if I can get through smog with it. I'll call Limit, and PTE tomorow.

On the other hand, I had a TE-61 that spooled up way too fast for street use. It would just blow away the tires from a stand still, no foot brake. Same thing at the track, 5psi launch, and I just broke traction 2ft. off the line. A larger turbine housing helped, by slowing down the spoolup. I could then launch at 9psi and still have good traction while my turbo spooled. 60' dropped from 1.65 to 1.51.....no other chenges. On the street, I can now just stomp it, and traction and spoolup went together perfect. A little bigger turbo is OK. You will have no problem spinning tires. I just bought a GT67, but my car sits untill better weather.

What size tire do you run? A taller tire make the engine and turbo rpm come up slower. I run a 275/60/15 BFG DR so, traction is'nt as much of an isue... Yet:D. I really want this thing to have as crisp of a response as I can get. I know I may be asking alot but, I hate having a laggy street car.

I tried 27"....too little, then 28" ET street, then 28"slicks. I also have the new MT street radials, 275/60 (28"tall) I got a 1.52 60' with those steel belted units. Sweet tire! I always use 28" now. A TE-61/PT54 with a .63 housing produced insta-spool that just was too much, too soon. POW! A larger housing helped alot. I bought a .85 housing to slow down spoolup. Picked up 3mph, and better 60'. I have a non-lockup 9" Art Carr. Best 60' and response I have ever had with a GN. Feels fine on the street.

Even with a 28" tire (ET street or Drag Radial), I can spin on the street with just rolling on the throttle at any speed under 30mph. Doing a burnout combined with a sticky track is a totaly different senerio. I wish I had skipped the smaller turbos and jumped right into a decent sized hairdryer. It seems we have the same tranny work. I also have a T-brake, and full Art internals. Love'em!. Just trying to stop someone from making the same mistake as me. If you do get a PT54 (TE-61) or smaller, make sure to ask for the larger turbine housing. I still think a GT67 (TE67, PT67) is a perfect turbo. I ordered a .85 housing for that turbo, but you could also ask for a .63 for quicker spool. Call Red Armstrong.

Talked to Don @ PTE and Chopper @ Limit this morning and have come to the conclusion that, I may not pass the visual part of inspection with a PT61. I was told that a TA61 with a stock inlet bell should support my goals (both smog and performance) just fine. Maybe, my next "performance" mod should be out of state car reg:rolleyes: ? Thanks, for every ones input on this:) .

hey just to let you know...I asked about a stock appearing cover for the PT61 and it is possible but since there is really no desire for it...we don't have any intentions of doing one...the only reason we do a stock appearing cover for the 64 is because of the TSS class...yes a TA61 would do the job for ya...oldie but goodie turbo :) not really the same as a PT61 but I've seen guys in the high 10's with that turbo as well...it's just the GT61 is more efficient and makes a tad more power...

How many machanics are going to know about the turbo's recirculation of the valve cover breathers? Is your state that tight? I'm glad I live in VA.
