Hey everyone,
Im in the process of potentially trading my Nova for a Grand National and Im doing my best to brush up on all the knowledge I can. I've had turbo cars in the past as well as supercharged ones and my current car is all nitrous, but they have all used a water/meth kit, usually from Snow Performance, but everything I read about these cars is claiming either "alky" or all methanol to be used.

Is there a reason why a water/methanol mixture isn't used, or could it be with the same results (warding off detonation)?

thank you!

The most intelligent TB owners that use alky run the kit from Alky Control. It is a kit that can use straight methanol which others like Snow can not. The Snow kit is not specific to the TB. The Alky Control kit is a perfect fit to the TB. It's pretty much plug and play. If you search Snow here you will see many posts that say it sucks. Straight meth is the best way to go. Alky Control is a vendor here. Julio is the owner and if you call you talk directly to him so you get real answers to your questions. Julio has posted detailed instructions on how to tune with alky.

Simply stated. If you are are going to be new to a Turbo Regal, Then this is even more a reason to go with the system Pronto suggested. Get it and don't even think about it anymore. Let the rest of the world do their own thing.

We are different.

I can help elaborate a little further. Water can be used with the kit.. and if IAT temps are high enough(meaning your monitoring them) then water isn't that much of an issue if used. And would be recommended if you live in an extremely hot environment to help with boiling issues meth can have. Like Saudi Arabia.

I by no means am saying water doesnt work, just that our cars are fuel hungry, typically run fueling based on a MAF setup that pegs out early(255 gm's), and obviously can use the octane. As temps change water responds differently on our cars and is a constant mess with tuning vs meth is pretty stable year round.

In laymen's terms, water doesnt push the piston down. It is however easier on the pump. So if we're talking whats best for the kit.. water, whats best for the motor.. methanol. So when MFG's suggest using water its for a variety of reasons.. most have nothing to do with whats best for the motor. Or suitability of lines/fittings. I wouldn't use a flammable liquid through plastic unprotected lines under pressure.

I appreciate the help, gentlemen. Now for the rookie question...could someone link me to the kit i would need. I fully intend on instantly putting this car into the 10 second quarter mile circle.

I like your enthusiasm. Any bets on how long till the head gaskets go?

They are strong engines, control detonation just like any other turbo engine. Buddy of mine has an unopened one running low 11s on the foot break. Never has blown a headgasket once and he's had the car since the 90s

I never blew a head gasket. Just wore out a bone stock motor that was running deep 11's because I did something stupid.

change of pace guys. Unfortunately, I may not be joining this group unless someone can say something about this that i dont already know. I was going to trade my nova for a Grand National and asked for some pics. he sent a few and I noticed that the interior was all red and then discovered it is just a GN clone from a T-Type. It's still a nice car, but he wants $16k for it, which was already a loss on my part before i figured this out and now it would be a huge hit if i did the trade.

Anyone have any input? BTW, if this breaks the rules, I apologize.

by the way, when i told the gentleman that I dont think this car was a true GN, he changed the ad to reflect this. I dont think he was being sneaky in any way what so ever. He just didn't know.

A lot depends on what was done and by who to evaluate the value of the car. It's got some nice mods but no details on the engine Trans build. Much depends on your goals. 16k is high for a clone in my opinion unless the value of the parts in it is high.

As far as i know from what the owner tells me, the build on the motor and trans is new. It has a Precision 6262 turbo, 60lb. injectors, headers, the downpipe/wastegate, and some misc. stuff. The tranny as as far as i know just has the converter in it. The interior put me off for some reason. I just expect a true GN for that price. My car has a trade value of around $25k as it is and i just dont want to take any hits on this, but a nice GN is hard to find.

I think its 5-6k overpriced.. With all the mystery stuff..
