I have been saving pics since you started. I am gathering parts as we speak, looks good. Thanks for sharing the build with us.... I can't wait to start my project. Your setup gives me something to look forward to...

Would oval pipe have helped under the car to gain more ground clearance...

You're right BandAid. After I drive it around for a while, I may go back and refine a few things. I think I can notch the crossmember maybe up to 1" and use oval tubing to gain another 3/4" or so. I suspect after I drive it very much, it'll change from round to oval by itself. :-)

I was going to start the car last night for the first time, but had a few gremlins. There were 3 different fuel leaks. The worst one was an injector O-ring. I got up early this morning and fixed that one, then I found one more leak. I managed to get it fixed just before church this morning. I hope that's the last leak. If I have time tomorrow night, I'll double check for leaks one more time, then reassemble all of the plumbing, then try to fire it up. Cross your fingers!

It lives! At least it did for a few seconds tonight! It shut off after 10 seconds, which was just fine. It didn't have any oil pressure yet. I still haven't bolted up the torque converter either. I tried to fire it up again, but it wouldn't fire. Hopefully, I'll be able to fix it and be driving soon.

I fired it up again tonight! It runs OK considering I haven't done but a couple of minutes of tuning. It's very crisp. However, the oil pressure is too low. I may try another mechanical oil pressure gauge tomorrow. If that doesn't work, I'll pull the engine and try to figure out what I screwed up. ;-)

something to know about the LS motors.

they are as anal as they come with it comes to the O ring and pick up tube. Gm sells a fat RED O ring that should be installed

GM uses a blue O ring for car pick ups and it doesnt work well with a Truck pick up tube. The answer is the FAT red o ring and has to be seated 100% correct

another thing to address is the oil pump. inside the pump is a little ledge that is on the spring side of the pump. it needs to be knocked down [this is called the ported pump mod] another mod you can do is remove the piston and the spring from the orifice. install a small shim and this will bump up your oil pressure.

if you were to buy an PORTED HIGH PRESSURE pump say from a manufacturer that sells the GM ones this is what you get. a LS6 oil pump with those mods.

oil pressure at warm idle 100% stock is 35-40
i run a self ported pump and 15w40 and see 55 psi at warm idle and fat O ring

if you see less then 30 psi in oil pressure at idle i would fix it immediately

hope this helps you out

also for tuning heres some guide lines

of course 14.7 for cruise/idle

up to 10 psi you can get away with 11.7 afr
you start getting above that shoot for 11.3 afr

timing depends on fuel and IATs along with compression

13* is a safe margin ive ran higher timing but again that depends on combo

Thanks for all of your help Quik. I bought a red o-ring from my local GM dealer today.
The engine is out of the car now, the oil pan is off, and I'm ready to get it back together.

good luck with your on going progress. make sure you seat that O ring and pick up 100% true if not youll tear that sucker and be in same situation as you currently are now. if you seat it 100% then youll be fine, thats one part of the LS motor i dislike. As simple as it is its also as easily over looked.

It's been a busy couple of days, but the engine is back in the car now. I removed the oil pump and disassembled it. It was in good shape. Since it was out, I ported it and shimmed the spring. I also slotted the oil pump pickup tube mounting holes and made sure that it was aligned with the oil pump. I installed a new "red" GM O-ring as well. After dropping the engine back in the car, I proceeded to break a header bolt nearly flush with the head. The engine had to come back out again in order to drill the bolt out. I dropped it back in this morning. Hopefully I'll get it fired up tomorrow night and find out that the oil pressure is good.

Damn you work fast. lol Excellent build, I'm sure everything will work out well when all said and done! Great job!

Yes you work very fast... This would have taken me 3 months to do ..lol

LOL...I'm just ready to get this one done. I fired it up again today and the oil pressure is great now. The cold pressure is around 60 psi at 1000 rpm and around 80 psi at 2500. I'll sleep much better tonight knowing that it's running good. I also mounted the new TCI Outlaw shifter this evening. I'll get a few more pics tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to cruise in it next weekend.

that sounds about right bud!!! glad to hear you got it figured out

After mounting the shifter, I also mounted the XFI and XIM boxes. I still have to clean up some wiring, wire the reverse light and neutral safety switches, alternator and the engine fan. After that, it'll be time to do some tuning!

It's been a while since I've updated. I finally drove the car today! I still have a couple of bugs to work out, but it's nearly ready to bring to the strip for some test passes. I've got to bolt on my HR Parts rear and still have to do a little more tuning, but that won't take long. I put the weakest spring in the wastegate for now. I only brought it to 5 psi. The boost comes in very fast...this thing is gonna be fun!
