oops, sorry Dave, got you confused with Turbodave ex of sdo...you are prolly a true blue Mich fan! (aren't those other guys there green?)

I am really surprised that none of the vendors have come up with a stock location Air to Water intercooler setup for our GN's

the documents i have for the liquid intercooler show its from company called precision weldments in chelmsford, ma.
508-458-4890

"the unit measures 26 1/2" tall, 18" wide and 8" thick with a dry weight of 27 lbs. with the front sway removed it is a bolt in replacement for the stock air to air intercooler found in the buick turbo regal and the firebird turbo t/a."

this paper work is from 1995 so i am not sure if the phone numbers or address are still correct.

Their is, I have a Sperco stock location Air to Water IC and like it very much. The tanks were designed by Conleys but it fits in the stock location and is not a whole lot bigger than the stock IC.

This IC has a 3" inlet and outlet and has a 2# pressure drop.

If you send me a e-mail I will be happy to send you a photo of the IC

Take Care

Re: COLD AIR ? What is that?

My GN has never seen cold air. At least in AZ you have air. Here in South FL I had to transform my GN into a fish so I could drive it with this 100% humidity ;) .

In a month or two you can come up here and get all the cold air your hearts desire.

My ride had a circuit consisting of the liquid I/C, ice-chest and 2 heat exchangers cooled by electric fans. The prior owner said it absolutely ran cooler than a front mount, all day long even without ice.

I still have 1 heat exchanger laying in the backyard shed somewhere :-)

NY, I like NY but,

No thanks, my GN is not 4wd like a Syclone/Typhoon, but that would be nice. I don’t think it would like the snow or the chains on the tires . I'll just have to wait for that day or two in January when we get 60* temps :D. Thanks for the invite. I'll just deal with the sun and 100% humidity .

SUPER COOL

Using a mixture of anti-freeze and dry ice will make for some verrrry low temps, so cold in fact that the anti-freeze will actually turn into a slush, with temps well below freezing. I fashioned an enclosure of my stock i/c and had 18 degree air coming out on a 85 degree day.

I was pulling up a search on intercoolers and came across this and thought everyone might like to know most VERY fast turbocars are using oil coolers off f-16's and other aircraft. they can be plumed with whatever size hose you wan't to flow your choice of cooling liquid through, I like alcky and dry ice, and arn't to spendy. I have a friend who just bought one and a I will find out what he paid. Thought someone may wan't to know this.

Thanks!!

There's lots of interest on this topic...please do let us know
all about what you find out!

Thanks again!

:)

The ideal intercooler for our cars would be a stock location combination air to air and air to water intercooler. You could make it look stock with 2/3 air to air and the last 1/3 air to water. The first stage would be air to air because the would provide the highest delta temperature which produces the highest efficiency in an air to air. The second stage would be an air to water.

You could make it look stock. You would have to size the water heat exchanger for normal driving boost levels to maintain the water temperature at a point midway between the boosted air temp coming from the air to air stage and the outside temperature.

During high (racing) boost events you would have to have a ice water storage capacity large enough to minimize the drop in the water temperature over the run time. During racing you would by-pass the water heat exchanger to minimize the rise in the water temperature.

Also, any second stage (water to air0 heat gain from the outside air would be from cooling the air feeding the air to air portion of the IC which would add to the overall efficiency.

Given the same amount of ice water storage capacity this arrangement would have a overall (average) higher efficiency that a water to water unit. By overall I a talking about the IC efficiency over a complete run.

Just an idea.

I have had ATRs Liquid Intercooler on my car for 15 years the sticker on top of the unit reads mix 50 % distilled water with 50% antifreeze.Over the years I have tried 50 % alcohol and 50% water and a bottle of Red Line Water Wetter in the summer months. In the winter I follow their recommendation and add the Water Wetter.I won't get into the peeing contest I will just say I like my Liquid Intercooler or I would not have shelled out the $2000 I paid for it in 1987.

Sorry Guy's I havn't been able to talk to my buddy yet. I did pull up a search on "INTERCOOLERS" and you would not believe all the stuff on there. There was one company that had a refrigerated intercooler for our cars on there for 1800. And a lot of Aircraft heat exchangers as they call them. Check it out guy's, lot's of stuff you wouldn't think would be on there. As soon as I talk to my friend about the F-16 cooler. I'll keep you posted.

I read about the refridgerant one. It uses the AC unit to cool the intercooler all the time. Seemed a little complicated  and expensive.

I have done some more looking around on the net at ALL the coolers that are out there, Boy are there a ton!!!!! I have done all measurments for the cooler and am trying to find out what will off a nother car,or truck. So far I am going to try to find a Starion cooler to look at first hand. Also does anyone happed to know the flow #'s of that cooler, or another cooler that may work? The Guy's at the starion board seem to like a cooler off a truck called a Fuso FE, never heard of it myself but i'm looking. Keep in mind this cooler will be horizontaly mounted.

I'll keep you posted.

Yea, heat soak the engine in the staging lanes in hopes to gain time. Kinda a lose/lose IMHO.

Definatley has "sucker" written all over it.

From looking at everything I can find on this site on intercoolers I came across a post where some, turbodr, I think uses two stock style coolers. Any one know how to get ahold of him?If so can he e-mail me at Gamblejer@aol.com. I am going through all this to try to come up with a new or different way of intercooling these cars. The lower we can get the intake charge temps the less octane you will need do run as well as make more power. Here in AZ You CAN'T cun a car on the street with a fm and expect to use the a/c and not overheat. So the goal is to try to come up with a intercooler that flows well, cools very well, and put it in a place that won't hurt engine cooling. I have a local buddy who has also owned a couple low 8 sec cars who is willing to build the kits once we decide on the best way to skin this CAT! Finally if any one has any ideas that may HELP, fire away.

THX.
