Oh, and one other word regarding the closing of Buick stores. GM actually has a strategy in place to consolidate Buick, Pontiac and GMC into three-brand dealerships. There were two standalone Buick dealers here in Memphis that closed in the last year and low-and-behold, two Pontiac-GMC dealers added Buick to their lineups.

Thats interesting that you mentioned that. I have lived in this area (Philadelphia suburbs on the Jersey side) for most of my life. Up until 10 years ago there were 2 local Buick dealerships in the next town over (Cherry Hill, NJ). 1 turned into a Jaguar/Saab dealer. The other changed owners less than 8 years ago. Just recently, that Buick dealer closed up. The franchise was purchased by a Pontiac/GMC dealer in the next town over. But what has been mentioned about Buick/Pontiac/GMC makes sense. No more stand alone dealers

I hope bri horse is right. but the 'plans' YOU heard of, may be their INTENTIONS. Current 'intentions' have zero bearing on whats actually going to happen down the road. They may be gearing up, to build something, in CASE they can find a quick solution to their sales defeats. I mean, you cant say "well, if in the next 18 months, if we dont fix **** quick, were shuttin down, so since were hurtin, were going to cease all current, and future plans for now." No, you gotta keep trudging on, till the man himself comes out and says it in a memo to the second in command, "put the word out, that were shutting down permanently." So the 'intentions' of puttin the enclave together for next year, doesnt necessarily mean anything.

I didnt mean her dealership is closing, I mean the ENTIRE DIVISION is closing. I asked her specifically, "are they closing THAT SECTION down? or buick entirely." She said BUICK is gettin the axe entrely. The whole division. Now, this is coming from within the dealership. Thats why I think it has a little merit. I hope to GOD it is indeed a rumor. The impression I got from her was, theyre closing down, if they cant pull a rabbit from a hat, within the next 18 months. As in, they have a projected 18 months left worth of money/ideas to keep them going, and if they dont pull some miracle car out of their heinies in that timeframe, its game over for 'the other oldsmobile'

I hate to admit it but, if you look at ALLLLLL the rest of the big 3 divisions, everyone is sorta heading in the same direction. Except buick.... I hope they dont 'old people car' themselves into oblivion. As smart and 'high speed' (as we call em in the army) as their engineers are, they sure went in the entire wrong direction this past 20 years. I dont get it..... Ill still pray for em every day

As long as Buick is #1 in China, an ever growing driving nation, it will be around. Just because it is around does not mean it will have anything close to a GS or a GN. Rumors are just that, rumors.

Greg, and WH1 make good points. Info that I have seen/read indicates it's highly doubtful Buick will be going out of business any time soon.
They're selling Buicks by the thousands every month in China. They can't open factories fast enough. Buick sales in other places over seas is also pretty brisk.
IMHO all this doom and gloom talk about Buick is misguided.

Also had a local Buick"only" dealership close just to Re-open 10 miles away in the Pontiac\GMC dealership, now almost half the cars on the lot are Buick. I think its a good strategy by GM to consolidate with Pontiac dealerships to give consumers more choices/styles of cars to look at when shopping.

I too got scared when they closed down a huge dealership here in a major suburb of D/C. I do believe the later posts though, GM is trimming the fat and re-structuring in order to survive. I do believe that their position in the market place will slip a little more before they stabilize. Just my o2

I hope Buick will be around. In Sun City, AZ where my folks retired, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Buick. I think the most popular car in the area is a LaSabre.

Ya lost me there. I dont see china buying buicks, or ANYthing by the boatloads. their labor prices are that way for a reason, and now all of a sudden, theyre going to buy a really expensive, too wide/long american car, for QUADRUPLE of what they pay for a more efficient car made by their own nationality? The repair cost for a buick in china, would be crazy as well.
That makes absolutely zero logic, zero sense, and efficiency, space, and logistical/repair nightmares.
For what asians do with cars, the corrola or civic, daihatsu, kia, or suzuki would DESTROY a big american car over there. I'm lost.

article in this last month, that since the 70's or 80's, there has been over 300k
millionairs made in china. the govenment is also holding a trillion us dollars, which could destroy our economy, should they release it into the world market. The need for the us dollar is because that is the only currency the saudi's will accept for payment in exchange for the oil. however there is talk of a possible currency change to the euro-dollar, which would be devistating to our economy!
So it is highly possible for china to be buying buicks.

They don't have to keep selling Buicks in the U.S. to keep building them in China! There really doesn't seem to be much market share left for Buick in the U.S.

Our local Buick dealership closed last year....it was replaced by a Hyundai dealership. Do you guys remember the thread about a year ago about the Buick dealership in Manassas, VA. that still had a new 1987 GN in the showroom? That car was sold last year on Ebay, and the dealership closed their doors. Very sad, that dealership was there as long as I can remember.
