loose ground?

My lights were acting up and i found the side wall ground very loose,so my question is can that effect fuel mileage ? or at least the gauge ? because for the first week of having the car i got only 280 miles per tank ,and now Im just under full and at 96 miles.keeping track for the rest of the tank but It looks promising. any Ideas on whats happening?

Don't trust the gauge. They have a mind of their own.

I reset the odometer every time I fill up. I'm lucky to get 15mpg but that's pretty good all things considered.
