Hi, just got the car out of storage and @wot the scanmaster reads around 10 degrees of knock:mad: It was around 60 degrees outside, 44lbs of fuel pressure with the line off, a pte chip for 93 octane gas and 20 degrees of timing. It had about an 1/8 tank of old gas, and the rest was sunoco 94...and the boost was around 17-19 lbs. Do you think if i put a chip with lower timing and turn the boost down to around 12-15 it would quit knocking...or at least to under 3 degrees? Mods to the car are hotwired walbro 340, afpr, k&n, atr downpipe, atr exhaust, 87 computer, 87 maf, air temp sensor, good plugs, and a boost controller. Sorry for the long post but i really want to get the knocking fixed.
thanks for any help

Turn the boost down until you get no knock and you should be good to go, like around 13 - 15 #'s. You will probably have to turn your fuel pressure down also, so you wont run rich with lower boost levels. 40 - 41 #'s of fuel, line off. Were you running that level of boost before without any probs? Nick

Forgot to add.....the walbro340, hotwire kit, and the whole 87 ecm swap was done last night and the scanmaster shows a malfunction code 52=CAL PAK Error.
What else could cause the knock besides what i have already listed??

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge to watch when you go WOT?? May help you see if your fuel pressure is rising correctly with boost levels. Should rise one pound of fuel / one pound of boost.
I'm not sure of the cal pak error.........someone will chime in. You do have a 87 chip in the ecm right, not a chip for a 84/85?

when you swapped the ecm, did you swap the small chip (the calpak chip) from the 84 ecm in to the 87?

whoops, thought i was editing but i was reposting

Thanks for the help guys
1Quik85-I guess i will turn the boost down to around 12psi and turn the fuel pressure down too....I hope that solves my problem.
I will post results tonight. Last summer i was running 15PSI....but i didnt have a scanmaster, so i dont know if it was knocking or not. I dont have a fuel pressure guage to watch @ wot.
Buickpower-I did not swap anything from the 85ecm to the 87ecm.
I will take the cover off the 85ecm and look for a small chip to put in the 87ecm as you suggested. How big should it be????
thanks

the calpack chip carrier that the chip goes in is about 1''x .5", if you take off the cover you can't miss it, it's right there a couple of inches from the eprom carrier.

Do you have to do this with every ECM conversion? I never did when I installed my 87 ECM with a custom chip. Everything seems fine.......must be because the custom chip?
You should be able to get more then 12lbs. of boost out of her. Like 14 or 15 would seem reasonable with decent 93 octane gas. Nick

Turned the boost down to 10lbs, car still knocks, even up to 10.9 degrees. Its not false knock either because i can hear it pinging.
For the 87 ecm conversion i bought the ecm, maf, and a temp sensor
i hate this car

So, is the stock cal pak chip in the 87 ecm now? Is your chip a chip for an 87 ecm/car? Whats your fuel pressure set to now, might have turned her down too much? Maybe try putting back on the stock ecm, maf, etc. and see if your knock problem is gone. Are you running the stock coil/module still? I hate my car more:p

The cal pak is now in the car and took care of code 52. I only turned down the fuel pressure a few pounds so its ok. The chip is for an 87 car so yes its for the 87 ecm. How much timing is in a stock 87 chip? I could take the ecm conversion off but id have to test for knock by hearing because the scanmaster wont work. If i remember correctly with the old ecm i heard no knock at 15lbs. Yes im still running the stock coil/module.
I should have bought an 87!!!

87 stock chip same timing as the 85 stock chip.
If you ran it without the calpak chip,I would unplug/replug the orange wire off the battery and reset the ecm.
94 octane and 10#'s boost,shouldn't see any knock.
Definitely have a problem.
I'd check some of your other numbers on the scanmaster.
maf,o2's,tps,voltage,etc.
If it's running fine other than the knock,might put the 85 maf back on.
It might throw a code but should run with the 85 maf.
Could be a voltage drop at the fuel pump.
Lots of possibiities.

Here are some scanmaster readings, let me know what you think. The readings were taken at idle warmed up.

02 milivolts=100-700 jumping all around
AF=06
L8=37-41
bat=12.7-13.6, seemed to go down when revved up. With the car not running and the key on they would be at 10.8-11.7
Int=127
bl=150
clt=170
ats=69
r=800-850
tps=.44
iac=73
mal=no codes

thanks

IAC looks a little high
Voltage is suspect.
If you have a volt meter,you can check the alternator output.
Set it on 20v and ground, touch the positive lead to the bolt on the back of alternator.
Should be 14+ volts.
Can also pull alternator off and auto parts store will check it.
Any voltage drop will effect fuel pump output,especially under engine load.
Belt could be slipping.

Where exactly is the IAC and how should i go about adjusting it?
The alternater checked out ok.
I only have a few ideas left and im starting to get pissed.
I researched some posts and ive found a couple of guys with the same problem. Im going to swap the ecm and maf back to the 85.
I didnt know the scanmaster would still work, but aparently it will, but only with 02 milivolts and knock which is all i need.
If that still doesnt help the knock ill dump some 100 octane in it.

I took off the 87 maf & ecm and put the stock stuff back on. Now the fuel pump wont pressure up when the key is on, and the car wont start. What the heck is that about?
