Hello,

I may be starting a new project soon :D an LS-1 powered '47 Ford coupe. I know the LS-1 trannys (4L60E) are a derivative of the old 700R4. I'm sure most of the good billet "hard parts" will interchange, but should I keep the electronics or opt for an older style hydraulic shift? I may eventually do a turbo (hey, I'm hooked!) and use a FAST or BS3 controller, should that affect my decision? Are the block bolt patterns even the same?

Thanks!

Hmm, once again I'm on my own. :( Was really hoping to keep from making some expensive mistakes. Oh well, I ought to be used to throwing money down the drain by now. Thanks for looking!

Hey Russ,
Sounds like a pretty cool project.
Yes, the 4L60E is a dirivative of the old 700r4. The best guys to talk to are the F body guys on LS2.com. Most of them have broken pretty much anything that will break on the 4L60E.
Many of the very high horse power cars will swap them out for 2004r's or th400's. There are the few diehards that try to stick with the 4L60E, but as the guy who built my Buick trans said about them "the 4L60E is a trans with incurable weak points".

the 700 would be a better choice as it would be easier and cheaper to calibrate the shift points to the engines rpm range thru the use of a specific combination of governor weight and shift valve combination.there are now parts available through us that eliminate just about every weakness inherent in the mechanical design of the 700/4l60e.beyond this hydraulic calibration is a key factor in transmission longevity.

Hmm, I just remembered I've got an '85 MCSS 200R4 setting in the garage. I guess it'll bolt up ok? And converters are not a problem?

Chris, were I to go with a 700 or 4L60E, would I be better off with hydraulic or electronic control?

Thanks!

2004R works real nice behind a LS1 to. Stronger than the 4L60e or the 700r4.
