There's a guy down here with a silver 6-speed SS LS1 Camaro that has the STS turbo kit and last night at our local track (Moroso) I saw him run 12teens @114mph..... Needless to say I'm not very impressed with a V8 turbo car that runs 12's (some of the other LS1 guys were saying he would be much better off with some spray or a heads/cam/intake package).... LS1/LT1 4th gen F-bodies are really not the best car to turbo because there's really not much room in the engine bay.... This is why you don't see many with turbos and there are only a few that I've seen that were really fast.... On the other hand there are a ****load of turbo Mustangs!!!

If I was going to turbo an F-body it would be a 1st gen and it would look something like this......

Local guy with a 6spd formula has been 10.40's@138mph supposedly on pump gas.

t-76, 6.0 liter Iron block Built by ARE I think.

It's darn fast but he's spent TONS on it I hear.

But there are not as manny running in the 10's as you would think by now.

The head, cam, hose, LS1 cars still seem to be king in the LS1 world.

I just finished installing one tonight, My buddy is the local dealer. The car is going to the dyno sometime this week to be tuned correctly. IT runs real fat. THe system is only making 5#s of boost, THat is all that is recommended on pump fuel;. But wee also have the optional methanol injection we will have on in hnte next day or so. But to compare my other buddy has a 6 speed car that runs 12.20 at 115 and we pulled on him a fair amount but nothing crazy at 5#s. WE will be able ot run up to 8 #s with the methanol injection.
as far as not being inpressed with a V8 turbo, GO turn your boost down to 5#s and see how slow you TB is. With a good tune and traction i fell mid to low 11s possilbe in a completely stock car thru the cats and it is now quieter than with the factory exhaust.
That is pretty decent in my eyes

WELL SAID.

LT1 (94-97) are the worse V8 motor made by chevy. Take it from me. 1996 chevy caprice, freshly rebuild with zz3 cam, aluminum ported heads, Hooker header, exhaust system, re-cal PCM with LT4 knock module, 3.73 gears. this car run`s like a pig. My little 3800 supercharge V6 makes this motor like like a honda civic. I will never have anything to do with a LT1 cars.

It is a big car, so i guess it have a lot of weight (Fat) to carrie around. love the room inside the car. sometime i think this car will look better with flat screen TV and a nice audio system. with some 22 inch rims....;)

what? mounting the turbo all the way at the rear wheel...can some say major turbo lag. what happen to the muffler. please tell me this is not a street car...I am sick of fart cans.

Sorry not impressed. You spend all the money and go through the trouble of installing the kit and hopefully you will have an 11 second car..... Now an LS1 F-body with the basic bolt-ons (lid, headers, exhaust, etc.) can do the same thing with a 100-150 shot (TNT kit) and I will bet the nitrous car will be faster and again much cheaper/less headaches!!! For example I know of several bolt-on/spray LS1 F-bodies down here that have run low 11's @122-124mph.... They would spank the guy down here with the STS turbo and the bottom line is nitrous on these LS1/LT1 F-bodies is the best simple poweradder that flat out works without spending a crap load of money and having many tuning issues (from what I've been told the guy down here with his STS has had several).....

Turn my boost down to 5#'s?? LOL that is funny! You're point is taken although it is a moot one at best:)

I hope your buddy has good luck with the kit, but I wouldn't be surprised if he regrets not going the simple route!

there are alot of things off with the looks of that it, first off the trubo is 7 feet from the engine and that is not the best of locations, the exhaust gas cools soo much by the time it reaches the turbo that the velocity of gas entering the turbine is greatly reduced, even guys with short head to turbo stups wrap the pipes to maintain heat and velocity in the pipe, 2nd the retun path for intake air is another 7 feet back, can you say turbo lag, the only benefit is that the kit not having an intercooler the long pipe cools the air, but thats about it, its a easy kit to put on, usually turbo kits are great because of the ability to upgrade easily down the road, but this kit leaves alot to be desired, had this been a better quality kit with proper set up you could use it from 11's all the way to hig 9's with turbo uprades only and the rest of the pipeing left along, but i think high high 10's are the best you can do with this kit, i have to agree that wet nitrous injection is worth more than this shoddy attempt at a turbo kit.

I wont argue about nitrios being a better bang for the buck, But the bottle does run out all the time. This kit is not design for a race car in mind but a reliable daily street setup that adds as much power as any base supercharger kit made, And with nothing but a single pipe under the hood it is a very clean installation, And you be damn suprised how the spool up is considering the setup. But it is only a hi-fi 60 turbo. ANd the is no mufler at all now. But it is quieter than the exhaust system that was on the car, especially at cruise rpm.

for almost 4 thousand and dolllars i can buy 4 bottles, keep them all filled and get one filled a week for 30 weeks straight assuming that the cost of the kit and bottles is 1,000 for the price of the turbo setup, gaining more hp and who goes threw more than a bottle a week in a street car, there is just a low bang for buck ratio in this package.
Grant
ps the 4 bottles s so that you can't say " what if you bottle goes dry when you need it" cause you have 3 in reserve

That is pretty week:p Even 2 ton lt1 b bodys run mid 12's with turbo technologies crappy kit(also using a 60-1) I would expect much better from the "the latest and greatest thing" in a car that is 600 pounds less

Good gravy guys I have seen T76 turbo GNs run 14's too...does that mean they all do? You have NO idea what state of tune or how that car was running.

I agree with Black that on an LS1 car I would go heads/cam and spray myself but to condemn the turbo setup on an LS1 because we saw one car run 12 is not so smart.

Yeah, no doubt. My buddies ratty Nova flat dusted a board members GN at SCC Friday, but does that mean all GN's are slow. No, obviously.

You guys need to check out Rob Raymers website www.quartermileperformance.com and look at his single turbo LS1 Firebird. It will kill probably 95% of the members here when completed. I've always been very impressed with his car.

Sam ,that is not a fair statment,,he could kill 99% of the cars here, since not many of the cars here are 9sec car, maybe 60 of the 5000 members, plus he seems to be a vendor, which means deep pockets(with others money),,,,so vendor to vendor ,,his fanny would be toast......

His single turbo LS1 car is pretty impressive (probably the most impressive turbo LS1 street/strip F-body to date), but Cartek in NJ has a stock cube (346ci) heads/cam nitrous LS1 Camaro that has run 9.40's @141mph.... Until I see him go faster with a stock cube LS1 I still say the nitrous is the better way to go on those cars....

Also, keep in mind if we wanted to compare Rob's single 76GTQ stock cube LS1 to a few of the stock block GNs on this website it would get pretty ugly (let alone the Stage cars)!!! For example, Roy Garcia down here in Miami has run 9.45 @143.92mph with his 3435lb stock block GN that still has the stock .010/.010 crank (again stock cubes 234ci) and keep in mind he's doing it with a smaller turbo (72GTQ cut down to be TSM legal) and a stock ECM with a ME-R chip..... There are other TSM guys that are faster than him with smaller turbos that I could mention but you pretty much get my point:cool:

Yeah, I get your point, and maybe nitrous and a heads/ cam package would make equal power, but I was simply referring to turbo LS1's. My response was to the guys talking about 12 second turbo LS1's and my point was that sure there are some slow turbo LS1's but like every other car made, theres some fast ones (like Raymers). Not arguing whats the best way to mod an LS1.

The 9 second stock block cars here are being pushed to their absolute limits, whereas Raymer has some room to go with his setup. I assure you that car is more capable than whats been done so far.

Rob had that car in Bowling Green a few months ago at a Viper race. On the street he raced a DLM Viper that made 921hp to the tires and won. I think the car went a 10.17 @ 134 (I'm not 100% sure on speed here). The car is killer. If I could swing an Fbody, I'd get one of his kits in a hurry.

Has anyone built up an LS1 motor from scratch with 8-9 to 1 compression for a turbo setup? I would think that a bottom end as strong as an LS1 would be awesome for a ground up turbo setup.

The current motor in Robs LS1 is built for a turbo. Its not even turned up yet. Trust me, there will be very few members here faster than that car. And I'd seriously bet that it got built for 1/2 what an equally fast S2 car would cost to build. I'd trade Rob my GN and my mustang for that car! I love it!

Until he runs faster than the fastest TSM/stock block cars I'm not impressed and you can't compare him to the S2 cars cause he's not fast enough (yet) IMO.... Maybe there's a reason he hasn't turned it up all the way yet as you seem to think (maybe he's afraid of lifting the heads)?? I know there are several FI LS1 guys that were having problems keeping the heads on when they turned up the wick so I wouldn't be so sure that it will go much faster!!! Also, if when going FI with an LS1 you are better off with the 6.0L iron truck block unless you want to spend $6K+ for the C5-R block.... As far as the cost to build Rob's car it's a LOT cheaper for him cause I doubt you've seen what he charges for one of his kits as well as installing/tuning it not to mention all the other stuff that you need including a 12-bolt rear and tranny that can hold some power (might want to build that bottom end as well) I know a guy down here that priced everything from going the turbo route with his LS1 (he talked to Rob and Turbo Technology) and it was much cheaper for him to do a heads/cam forged 346ci motor (built for spray) than it was to go with a turbo....

If you want to build something cheap and fast build your mustang!!!!!

Madman & Co. was trying to build a single turbo LS1, but I think they scrapped it. I remember him saying they couldn't get it to hold the power. Of course, I think they were in the 1000+hp range.

Later,

Steve.
