When I used to have a 97 Camaro lt1, I removed the screen on purpose and never had a problem.
I'm not too sure about these on TR's though.:frown:

Take it apart and pop the screen out and never look back. If you have a good K&N in front of it, I doubt you will notice the screen is gone.

I wouldn't want a smashed screen in front of the element. That might funkify the readings.

having friends at the gm dealerships around my town they have kids comming in all the time with bad gas milage and performance problems as people said to "take off the screen it will perform better". it dont and the screen streightens out the air flow so the meter reads correctly. if you actually put the maf on a flow bench and leave the screen on it will flow like ported heads, and when you take the screen out the air bumps around alot giving bad readings. now the bad part the screen is not sold sepratly (it should be) but go to the junk yard ands pocket any screen from any lt1 powered vehicle.

your engine will thank you.

My car ran 11.53@118 with a 6.5" K&N on a screenless LT1 MAF stuffed into the stock airbox.

It runs and idles better than it ever did with any plastic MAF, including two GM originals.

Take a dremel to the screen ridge and the MAF will flow over 100 CFM more than it does with the screen in place. A K&N with a good throat venturi does a pretty good job of straightening the flow into the MAF, without restricting the flow.

There are K&N's that have really crappy, squared off throats inside. Those won't do the flow into the MAF any good.

As you can see by now, it really doesn't make a significant difference either way (screen in or out). Can't see where your minor amount of screen damage would have any noticeable adverse impact on performance.

Just make it easy on yourself--just leave it the way you now have it installed--as it's just a matter of your own personal preference. [If MAF now out (or you want to take it out, you can straighten the afflicted fins/vanes--if that would make you sleep better.]

I've noticed no difference in SM idle readings or performance between LT1 MAFs screened or screenless...

Well thats what i like about this board,I can get everyones opinons and there own experiences with what they did. Thanks to all who responded.
