What should a person have to pay to have a short block built (block squared, line bored/honed,deck plate honed and pistons fit). The block needs very little work. The rebuild is req'd because my head bolts stretched. The head bolts released at 45 ft/lb.There was no detonation/pre-ignition whatsoever since no carbon track breached the fire ring. The coolant leaked by the gasket.A very small amount of coolant got into the oil,but no milkshake.I'm going forged and have a brand new eagle crank, new Molnar forged rods, and steel caps.I don't understand what some of these shops are charging for??....$3k plus for an average short block??

about 1200 to 1500 with your stuff getting balanced. But you still have to factor r&r cam bearings, the cost of bearings, blueprinting everything, oil pump mods, spot facing timing chain cover for roller cam button unless you go billet roller which still requires a little work. Also checking the heads and whatever needs to be done to them.

To properly build one of these that will last at 100+hp per hole and document whats there you are looking at 20+hrs. I wouldn't even think about doing this kind of work for less than $100/hr. Especially dealing with a 25 year old block. Seems like everyone wants everything cheap and wants it to last. Cheap, fast, reliable. Pick only two.

If this block has 25 yrs usage why are there no ridges in the bores and why can I probably get away with 3.804 bore dia (provided cylindricity and parallelism) for a forged piston? Working 21 hours at 100 bucks/hr is significantly less than $3k. I have yet to see anyone document clearances and provide them to the customer.
