If the MAF is not broke don't fix it apply here? My original MAF is still working. It is the original. I ask because of all the post and signatures with other MAF. If they go bad do you up grade, replace with a stock one. Have the original repaired. TIA

Upgrade is expensive, but probably your best way to go. Rebuilts have a tendency to go bad right away ( do a search on here and you will see). Or you can always go to the speed density setup and ditch it altogether...

Since you still have a good one, take the time to research which way you want to g when the time comes...

There's also been many stories of people thinking they had a good MAF.... then the car running much better with a translator-LT1/LS1 setup.

For what the upgrade costs I would never risk my engine running a stock MAF

What are the noticeable improvements?

Same story here. When I swapped it out, I was sure it was something else as my car was bucking and not wanting to accelerate, but only when hot. Since I switched to trans/LT1 MAF, idle is much better as well as throttle tip in. WOT is probably the same, but now I have an extender chip so the new MAF actually gets used at WOT which is a nice feature too.

And for some reason, they get rid of wheelspin knock. AFAIK nobody has explained that one yet... but it's well documented.

He's right. When I would spin on the street, I'd get weird KR readings, but not all the time. Now I seldom have problems.
I have ghost KR during wheel spin, burn outs, 55 mph stomping. All of which have not been explained. It is not consistent but it is annoying listening to my audible knock device.

You should borrow a translator and see if it goes away. You might even luck out and pick up an MPG. Then it'll pay for itself. :)

Great... Found this thread and realize that I have my original MAF. No translator or anything. I thought I was ok!!

The only time I've had knock after getting alky is when the Nittos lost traction off the line at my local NHRA track. The revs went to a million..and the audible knock alarm sounded like the smoke detector when my roommate comes home drunk and cooks. :meh:

They can be cleaned too, which will usually improve the performance of the MAF. There is a product from CRC called Mass Airflow Sensor Cleaner. Comes in a spray can, most/some autoparts stores carry it. I usually spray it over a stack of clean white paper towels..You will be suprised what all comes out!

Sounds like your setup is too simplistic then. :P

That it is. I'll admit that there are times when technology dictates a better way. In this case it's metering air. Luckily people have already did all of the inventing for me!

I do need to check into things like the T-pro and others. I'll be checking in on this thread and reading others.

My car is still up on jacks waiting for rear control arm bolts anyway.
