My last oil change my brother in law installed a magnetic oil drain plug for me. I just changed the oil and it looks like there are a few very ultra fine particles stuck to it, so fine that once I touch them, wipe them off I almost can't see them on the rag or in the oil.

Is this normal???? I would imagine that's what the purpose of a magnetic oil drain plug is. I only wish I had taken a picture or two. I'm thinking that they could also be from my last turbo which took a dump. I haven't really run the car since.

I'm wondering if I should do some oil analysis. I'll likely also cut open the AC filter and have a look. 55,000 miles on this car. In addition to the oil I also add "hyperlube" zinc replacement at every oil change. I think I'll also stick a very strong rare earth magnet I have to the new filter.

When I ran a steel timing set, my magnetic plug came out with an afro on every oil change. Once I switched back to a stock set, the afro stopped.

It is very normal to see a small amount of powdered metal on the magnet. If you find shavings or chunks there's a problem!

Kirban sells both the oil pan and rear end magnetic plugs for around $20.

Yes, I had purchased these from Kirban's a while back, as for size I couldn't say off hand, sorry. I'm glad that this is "normal" I actually ran it for a while and changed the oil again, all good, no particles, and nothing visible in the filter either.

Most auto parts stores sell the magnetic drain plug for a couple of dollars if you need to find one faster.
