I have a 109 block with program steel caps on 1-2-3. CAT steel crank and KING bearings.
I can get .0018 main bearing clearance set up with the bores on the high and the crank on the split. To get over .002" I'm going to have to use Federal Mogul bearings instead (STD and STDX)
Is .0018 too tight for this setup? Should I pony up another $200 for the federal mogul bearings to get the clearance opened up another .0005?
The engine is capable of +600HP, so I know the block is going to move around a bit. Primarily a street car with a few track days here and there, but not too often.
