making a swishing/sucking noise when put in over drive and don't stop , but if you put in 3 rd it stops. I have been having trouble with it having to get high rpms before it would shift out of second when you drove it for 20 miles or so. Also when you shut car off you hear it for second in park. don't know how long been making noise had dump pipes open . anyone have ideal or had this problem??? can hear it to when you rev engine at first..It is a small noise..

Check tranny fluid?

I just took car down rd it was cool not hot ,but shifting hard out of 1 2 3 from 2 to 3 had to get it to 45mph shifted hard

o yea when I first started and put in gear didn't hear noise ,but after 1 mile ride I heard it..

Could it be the governor switch,or is there a vaccum line that goes to trans?? I would love to get this car right I try to drive it daily<looks like the mini van again tomorrow yea boy..Just thought of this I did not install the torgue converter shield would that hurt anything??

Has nobody else had this problem ? I DIRECTED TRANS FLUID AWAY FROM RADATORNO CHANGE,and also unplugged 4 wire that go to tran, and moved tv all the way to frt no ripples showing got car to 26mph didn't change out of 2 gear. I didn't change torque convert gov sensor on top of back engine should I???

Ive got myself confuse reading some of the threads about the tv cable. if I want the car to shift not so hard do I move cable closer to the radiator or toward the fire wall??

Can we get a little more background?
Did you make a or some modifications and then this started?
Is this a new car to you? A new/rebuilt transmission? Overhauled engine?
This just started out of the blue? Was shifting well in the past?

I bought the car ,and put a motor in I changed the fluid and filter in trans and torque conv . Im no mech got all advice from you all. I got used radiator from someone . anyways I drove car when I got engine in it shifted alittle hard.I reset tv cable and it done good until I drove 20 miles or so it started to shift hard gain. don't know much about trans. it shifted hard after car got warm or hot .put trans cooler on car still no change ,but now it does the hard shift even cold.. I changed fluid in torque conv not the tor conv

So we really don't know the history of the trans, torque converter, or the radiator?
You say you changed the fluid in the trans and converter? How was the converter oil changed? Unless it was opened up no telling what was/is in there. Trans may have shifted like this before you obtained it. Is this fair to assume?

I turned tor conv upside down for a week . yes anything is possible < but it seemed ok fo 2 or 3 weeks other than when it got hot.

I just about always have problems when I change the fluid on a high mileage trans that hasn't been maintained. The new fluid has detergent properties and there is no telling what the new fluid "loosened" up. Fluid still looking new and cherry red?
Did this trans have a "shift kit"?
A converter upside down still has that bottom side holding fluid.

I turned the tor conver on side some too. I don't know if it had shift kit,but the fluid was aliitle dark before changed . Witch way should I move the tv cable should I change the fluid again is there a sensor or wire I should check ?? also there was not much metal on magnet more grimy.

Well, have you ever tried to get water out of an old tire. It is pretty hard and there is a big hole in the middle. Same principle with the torque converter.

So what do you think I should do ?? I set the tv cable all the way back toward the fire wall and it shifted a lot better and the swishing noise gone ,but car was not hot. should I remove pan and drain fluid or what would be best?? if the tv cable is all the way back to fire wall is that to much?? what will be the sign that something else in trans is bad or going bad??? This is an 86 gn forgot to tell that ,sock chip I think. 3 inch down pipe ,kn air filter adjustable fuel reg ,and fuel hot wire is the only after market I can see done to car..I have the iac torque screw out of adjust getting a sm soon to adjust that back ,but that wont make shift hard right?

I would go to the gnttype.org and find the tv cable setting instructions and use them to set the tv cable. Moving it around you are adjusting the trans pressure and possibly damaging the trans by leaving the pressure too low to properly apply the clutches and having them get burnt up.
Depending on your budget and goals there are a couple options I can think of. Cheapest might be to pull the converter and have it cut open and serviced/rebuilt by a local shop. Or getting a stock type rebuilt unit.
Next up might be to replace the converter with a new or known good used piece. Used stuff is a crap shoot as you are seeing. I hope you haven't hurt the clutches by driving around with the tv out of adjustment . The tv is a connection from the throttle to the pressure control of the trans that raises the pressure in parallel to how much the throttle is open. More throttle gets higher pressure. By not having the tv cable adjusted properly can result in low pressure and clutches getting burned.
Are you local to one of the vendors who knows 2004r? They might have something used or rebuilt you could use.
A new converter might be the best option. David Husek or Dusty would be on the high budget , but would get a "new" converter built for your combo.

If it is shifting I'd keep running it. You may need to look into the valve body plate and replace it with a stock one. It does sound to me if it is shifting hard that holes were drilled larger at some point. I will look for the part number of a stock plate. They aren't too awfully expensive . Our desktop hard drive crashes so I am not back up to speed yet. I'm going to try to recover my info from the old drive but don't have a new drive yet.

So if I drop trans and replace with new torque conv that might be it ? would that make it shift hard ,or could it be bad pump how would I know? is there a way to trouble shoot before I do this just asking I don't have a clue you r helping me it did shift a lot better a few minutes ago ,but I read a tread that said moving tv cable toward the fire wall would make shift hard is that wrong? the reason I ask is because that is where I moved it to make it shift quicker..
