It depends on your state laws for CCW. Check on your state web site. Usually they will tell you what is required.
Here in Texas they do a local, state and federal back ground check. You then (first time) spend 15 hours (been a while) class and range time. Renewal is 6 hours of class (really up date on any law changes) and range time.
I have had a CCW for about 10 years. Most states have done away with the traverlers law (where if you were so far away from home) you were allowed to carry a hand gun for protection. It's now a fellony to get caught with a consealed hand gun on your person away from your business or home.
