what is the max mounting depth. I was thinking of getting these infinity REF552I 5-1/4" 2-way spekaers. The mounting depth on them is 2 1/2". i tried looking for the eclipse 2 ways but could not find them on ebay or crutch field.

I just went through that exercise and got some very close measurements on the Concert II speakers. The speakers fit into factory plastic baskets and the absolute maximum depth that will fit into the basket is 2 1/8". Now, you could cut the back out of the basket and that would allow another 1/4" or so before you would interfere with the window channel. So the 2 1/2" Infinities you're looking at will be too deep. I went with the Infinity Kappas which are just over 2 1/16".

By the way, I show the Infinity Reference 5.25s at 2 5/16" deep in the Crutchfield catalog. If you cut the back out of the basket they might just fit. Remove the lower door panel and take one of the CIIs out. You'll see what I'm talking about. Good Luck.

Thanx for your help.

My mistake, the mounting depth is 2 1/4" according to this website Click on the pic for the Inf ref .

I did open up the panel and saw the basket you are talking about. How are the infinnity kappas sounding? Does it have a swivel tweeter?

Damn, i just saw the price for the kappas, its 103$ on that website. yikes. But i will still consider them because of better fitment, and hopefully better sound. The references were i think 68.88$. Is there any other website that offers better prices?

thanx again for helping out.

Better check before you buy the 552i referencees. Crutchfield showes them as 2 1/2" deep. By the way, you'll have to break the rivet on the one hole which holds the original CII speaker in the basket. It was a pain.

Actually, the Kappas I bought are the components with the separate crossovers and tweeters. They're $160 on that site which is a good price. The list for over $300. I haven't installed them yet as the new amp I'm installing just arrived today and I'm still waiting for the Sub and enclosure to get here. If you're interested, I'll keep you posted when they all get put in.

Do you think the non-component set is also 2 1/16". The only problem with that website is that they do not give all the diminsions.

With the component set, where are planning on mounting the tweeters?

Crutchfield shows the 5 1/4" full range Kappas at 2 1/16 deep so they should fit fine. I plan to experiment with locations using velcro for a couple of days (weeks?) before permanently mounting the Kappas. The three choices are; 1) in the dash in the stock location, 2) in the A Pillars, or 3) in the door panels just above the CII pods along the horizontal surface in front of the door lock switch. I'm hearing that the dash location will result in harsh high freq. sound so i'm betting on the door panel location, but we'll see. Take care,

By the way, the reason I chose the Kappas over the Reference Series isn't just becuse they cost more but because I'm very keen on bass and I think the Kappas will provide more thump in that area.

im going to pick up those infinities tomorrow. i had my door apart today measuring. the prev owner already had aftermarket speakers in there (hollywood brand  ) i measured those and they are 2.5" from top to bottom. i also rolled the window down and stuck my hand back there to see how much space was between the magnet and the glass, ALOT. maybe im missing something but i think you could fit a pretty deep speaker in there. the only thing i could see getting in the way was some knob like thingie attatched to the glass (im guessing an up-stop). if the magnet is as wide as the hole in the door, then it might get in the way.

TurboBrian, were your door speakers (the Hollywoods) mounted in the plastic cups which are from the original Concert IIs? Or were they mounted on standoffs directly to the door? The cups only measure about 2 1/4" in my car and they are the originals.

no cups. there is a plastic stand-off thing that the speaker attatches to. no bottom, its open all the way into the door. its 4-sided, but only has 3 pegs. if you like i can get a picture of it when i have it apart today. regardless, it sounds like it isnt original then i guess.

Yes, I'd like to get a picture when you get a chance. If the standoffs your speakers are mounted to are an aftermarket piece, then i'd like to find out where it can be gotten. It would enable other TR guys to get bigger (deeper) speakers in their doors. Thanks,

i put the infinities in this morning. no clearance probs with the window. i had them side by side with the old ones and from the bottom to the screw holes the infinities were a hair taller. from the screw mounting up the infinites wil about a 1/4" taller (taller rubber ring and the angled tweeter sticks out). even being slightly larger than those hollywoods they worked fine.

i snapped a few pics of the mounting thingie. the first two show it by itself, the third is on the car. note on the car pic the lower right doesnt have a peg and doesnt screw into anything. in fact there is no hole in the door for one. im guessing the factory mounting things are the same?

i just realized i have a Profile 5.25 component set with crossovers
in my old car which i installed. Might as well uninstall it and put it in my GN.

Probably put the swivel tweeter flush mount on the vinyl ledge above the door pods and aim towards the center of the car. I will aslo disconnect the dash speaker for better imaging.

Turbo Brian, Now I understand what you have. That is the factory basket that has had the rear bracing cut out of the back of it. Someone probably installed larger speakers in the past and had to cut out the back. You can still see the little nubs where the rear bracket used to be. The factory speaker probably came as an intergral assembly with the basket. Mine had a rivet attaching the speaker to the basket in the 4th hole where it doesn't mount to the door. I can't see that it could cause any problem to cut the back off, which is what I'm going to have to do. I just test fitted my Infinity Kappas tonignt and even though the depth is about the same, the magnet is very much wider than the factory speaker and will not fit into the stock basket.

Just installed part of my component set up today. I cut of the stock harness on the delco speaks, put two crimps on the ends, and attached it to my new speaks and connector on door. Very quick and easy.

i left out the crossovers and tweeters for another day cause of more wiring.

I had to cut out the baskets so the speaker magnet would fit. I came into a problem with the speaker not going in completely cause there was a metal lip on the speaker basket that was wider than the plastic GM cup. It could partially go in one way, but then the other side would stick out. Anywayz, i still mounted them, the third screw could only catch 1 or 2 threads in the screw hole.

Here are random thoughts i came up with while mounting them:

If window clearance is an issue, you can easily raise the speakers by using additional hardware (washers, longer screws) under the stock plastic stand offs. You can also easily raise the stock CII pod with same hardware also for more clearance. i dont see window clearance as being an issue, like someone said before there is alot of room.

Right now i am powering the speaks with my pioneer 8300 (mp3) head unit. And will continue to do so with the crossover and tweeters until i have time to install amps.

I found two cool spots for the tweeter. it can be flush mounted on the vinyl ledge (but away from the CII pod, to the left cause of clearance problems with speakers). Drawback to this is you have to cut a hole for the tweeter on the panel.

The other option is to mount the tweeter surface mount (it sticks out in its on pod provided by the company) on the left side of the CII pod (not the face side, but the edge side). You can swivel the tweeter to point to the ears, without too much obstruction in the way. This location is ideal cause the two scews needed to mount the pod cannot be seen if you ever remove the tweeter cause of the black carpet or black grill cloth. You can also wrap the tweeter pod in black carpet or cloth to camourflouge it. It would be a clean looking install.

I bought this Pprofile component set from ubid for like $30 (120w peak power) and it sounded good when powered by my amp in my old 93' ford escort system. the tweets could be installed in a variety of ways and they provided the rings and pods.

dpok69, You didn't say how you liked the Profiles compared to the original CIIs. Are you still using the dash tweeters? You know they are in parallel with the door speakes, don't you? Probably should get those crossovers installed before long as the HU won't like driving two sets of speakers without crossovers for long.

The profiles are putting out much more bass when compared to the original. I had the original on the passenger and the profile in the drivers. I put my hand on both of the CII pods individually. On passenger side you can barely feel the speakers hit, but on the drivers there was bass.

The original speaker that came out was 4 ohm, and the profile is also 4 ohm, so i dont think i am really overdriving it. One thing i hate about the stock system is the treble is sharp. So i rarely blast the system at high volumes. This most like has to do with the dash speakers pointing at the windshield and scattering the high frequencies everywhere.

When i do install the tweets, the dash speaks are getting unplugged.

Overall, the system sounds much louder. But because of the small size of 5 1/4, you can't get alot of bass like the bigger speaks can. i had the profiles in my escort powered by an amp pushing 100 watts peak for each speaker and the bass is not all so impressive when compored to maybe a +6" speaks.

Thats okay though cause i plan on building a sub box that will fit on the ledge in the trunk.

Most of the bass in my system right now comes from my rear deck pioneer
? X 10s in the back. i guess cause of the huge trunk are cars have bass is enhanced through these pioneers. It hits so hard it can rattle the trunk, and people who sit inside think i have a system.

Thanks for the update. I'm installing my 5.25 Kappas today along with a new Kenwood 5 channel amp. My RF HE 10" Sub came in today and my enclosure should be here Monday or Tuesday. I'll be playing with tweeter locations for a week or so between the dash and the ledge above the CII pods. I know what you mean by the tweets being too harsh. I have a pair of Sony X33s in the dash and with just the Clarion HU pushing them I have to turn the treble down to -2 or -3. I'm afraid the tweets on this Kappa Component system will also be harsh if they live up to their reputation so I probably won't put them in the dash just for that reason. They should play a little softer down in the doors. Take care,

dpok69 - I spent almost all day yesterday installing my Infilnitys, kenwood amp and wiring. my Kappas went into the doors by just cutting the basket like you did. I did run new wires through the door harness for both the woofs and tweets and I installed both Kappa crossovers behind the under dash panel on the passenger side. They just fit.

When I powered the system up I had a bad vibration resonance on the passenger side door. I solved it by installing rubber spacer washers between the speakers and the baskets in each of the three mounting locations on each speaker. That solved the vibration problem.

I'm going to drive around for a couple of weeks trying various locations for the tweeters like the arm rest and the dash. Right now I'm running them sitting on the dash over the stock locations and am surprised that they don't sound harsh as I suspected they would. I'm running them about -1 or -2 with the treble contron on the HU.

My sub enclosure should arrive tomorrow so I can work on some bass this week. Take care,

Cool, i did not think of putting the crossovers in the golvebox\panel area . Right now i have a neon tube in that location that lights up through the slit in the panel.

I was gonna power the interior speakers with the HU, but i reconsidered and am gonna do it with amps now. Its gonna be alot more work, since i want a clean install in the trunk. Was it hard to run the wire through the door?

i also have treble controls on my HU turned down. My gf thought i put a box in the car with the additional bass my car put out. How does your system sound so far and what are you using in the rear?

Come to think of it. Except for the pioneer rear speakers, and an additional electronic pioneer crossover, My whole system is almost profile. i have a profile 4 X100watts baja amp (40$ Ubid 3 years ago) and a 2X200 watt California amp ($90 Danmark 5 years ago). Bot these amps were in my old system. The California amp provide more than enough power for my 15" Sub when bridged. What i liked about my old sytsem was, even with a blown factory ford rear speakers, my system slammed hard and loud with a minimal investment in hardware.

I plan on making a custom box that will fit on the ledge perfectly. I don't plan on building a BIG BASS system like my fords, so i can keep my trunk space still. Probably run two tens or two tewlves.

Good luck.
